San Diego Fit Foodie 5K Race Recap

November 14, 2016 By Laura

This is a sponsored post that contains affiliate links.

I used to run races.

I even placed in a few!

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve attempted a race.  The Fit Foodie 5K/10K Race Weekend in San Diego seemed like the perfect time to change that.  Leave it to me to make my first race back a food-related one!

John Hancock’s Cooking Light & Health Fit Foodie Race Weekend is more than just a race.  It’s a party, a gathering for food lovers, and a place to share passion for food and fitness.  Calories are both burned and earned!

The Run

The race was bright and early on a Saturday morning.  There was an option for a 5K or a 10K, but I decided not to push it and did the 5K.

My baby sister joined too!  I love that we get to do things like this together.  We share the same passions for food and fitness.  I guess that’s proof we are related… even if I spent most of her childhood telling her she was purchased from gypsies.

I digress… the race took place along the water at the Embarcadero Park.  There’s nothing like a gorgeous view and a great breeze to make you want to move.

While it wasn’t a PR, I was happy with a 26:24 finish after my hiatus.  I was 19th in my age group!  That’s especially satisfying given that there were over 1300 runners and we spent the first mile kind of trapped behind people.

We received a medal to reward our run, then moved into the John Hancock Vitality Village (a.k.a. the most delicious finish line ever).

The Celebration

The celebratory food and drinks in the John Hancock Vitality Village was the perfect post-race experience!

There were rows filled with delicious and healthy food samples, culinary demonstrations, and mini fitness classes led by certified pros.

Another highlight of the race was seeing so many friends there.  My sister and I ran into Teresa from Eat Drink & Be Skinny.  Now we have plans for a friends workout!

As much as we hate to admit it, fitness without good nutrition is not nearly as impactful on your health as when you combine the two.

That’s why John Hancock has created John Hancock life insurance with Vitality, which rewards people for the healthy choices they make, like exercising, seeing the doctor, and now, purchasing healthy foods at the grocery store.

With John Hancock Vitality and the new HealthyFood program, not only can you save up to $600 a year on the nutritious foods you buy, but you can also significantly save on your life insurance premium and earn valuable rewards and everyday savings for those healthy food purchases.

Visit JHRewardsLife.com for more information on how you can be rewarded for the small steps you take towards a healthier life!

Oh, and did I mention MEB was there?!

Meb and Bill posing for pics. How cool for these younger girls to get to run a race and meet their heros?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of John Hancock. The opinions and text are all mine.

Now it’s ON… I’m already plotting my next race!

Motivation from Team Better + WIAW

November 9, 2016 By Laura

Some days I need a little extra push.

Today, especially.

I’ve been trying out a new app from Team Better that challenges and motivates me every morning with something different.  They’re fairly easy, but I love that it adds something new to my routine.  For instance, Monday’s challenge was to do Sun Salutations.

Running… Is a Struggle. Food is not. [WIAW]

October 26, 2016 By Laura

Cool(er) weather makes me want to run.

My body sometimes has other plans.

There is a rumor that San Diego is 70°F (that’s 21°C) all year long.  This is a lie.  It was as high as 90°F (32°C) just last week!  Yesterday it finally cooled to a comfortable 72 and I decided to hit the trails in Balboa Park.

This is my favorite place to run.  It looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book!

How to choose the right deodorant for YOU!

September 23, 2016 By Laura

I can be forgetful.

Yes, it does get worse as you age.

At 33, I’ve forgotten a lot of things: my keys, where I parked, conference calls… once Vegas and I BOTH forgot to turn in a rental car.  For a week.

Most recently I forgot deodorant.  This is not the first time I’ve forgotten it, but it’s particularly embarrassing when you’re headed to the gym where you quite obviously need it.  This is where choosing the right deodorant for you (and your degree of forgetfulness) plays a role.

Softball Debauchery & Anti-Inflammatory Eats [WIAW]

September 21, 2016 By Laura

I can’t stay healthy.

Don’t ever age past 30.

We were in at the softball world series last week in Kansas City playing with our old Atlanta team.  First Vegas went down with a hamstring.  Then – because we do everything together – I did mine.  2 weeks before we go to Italy.  I swear these things never happened when I was in my 20s!  Sigh.

In other news, we had delicious BBQ that I ate so quickly I forgot to take pictures of.  There were also breakfasts of Krispy Kreme and Fireball.  #sorryimnotsorry

Downtown San Diego Sunday Funday

August 29, 2016 By Laura

San Diego is always filled with activity.

Literally.  There’s a festival very weekend!

Even though I’ve lived in San Diego for less than two years, I don’t often spend time in some of the most “famous” areas.  This weekend my baby sister and I decided to do a little adventuring on foot around Downtown, Sea Port Village, Waterfront, and Little Italy.

We started out with a little jog to the Convention Center… only to run these stairs.

Why I Started Exercising + WIAW

August 24, 2016 By Laura

Some days I love to run.

Some days I’d rather light myself on fire.

Today I have an uncharacteristically sappy story to go along with my cloudy (thank god – it finally cooled down) run.

It’s about what motivates me, even when I don’t realllllly feel like dragging my ass to the gym or out for a run.  Exercising was not really my “thing” until about age 24.  To be honest, you would have been hard-pressed to convince me to much more than walk to dinner.  My mentality was “I’m not a big person, so why bother?”

I would exercise but it makes me spill my drink

Socca Waffles, Glutes, and WIAW Eats

August 10, 2016 By Laura

The Olympics have taken over our TV.

Is everyone else this obsessed?

I feel like this week has been background to the Olympics.  I work while watching the Olympics, I plan workouts while watching the Olympics, Vegas and I eat dinner in front of the TV… we are obsessed.

I did get away for a run though.  It was a gorgeous day, despite all the hills.
