2015: A #StrangeButGood Year

January 1, 2016 By Laura

Happy New Year!!!

Please god let 2016 be a little more sane.

In true fashion, I spent this year in a #strangebutgood whirlwind.  I eloped in January, sold my condo in February, moved across the country in March, became certified as a trainer in April, honeymooned to Greece in May, helped my mom sell my childhood home in September, made my first money as an independent marketing consultant in December… and squeezed a lot of trips to Vegas with Vegas in between it all.

I thought I was someone who sailed through change, but it’s no walk in the park.  It may look like life is a party; however, the reality is that I have felt a lot of loss… I miss my hometown, my family, and my friends.  I’m still trying to get used to being jolted awake by a screaming bird, a parrot banging on a cow bell, and a dog incessantly whining.  Needless to say, I learned to cry.  A lot.  I feel like I am literally losing my mind sometimes.  I’m adjusting to living in a new city where I don’t yet have a tight group of friends.  Vegas has become my best friend as well as my wife this year.  (You should all feel sorry for her.)

Life is beautiful…

Palm Springs Shennagins + WIAW

December 30, 2015 By Laura

I’m kidnapping a Swiss girl.

And not just because she makes me breakfast.

Lucie and I have been entertaining Vegas for the past few days.  I can’t remember ever having a more #strangebutgood Christmas.  We opened presents a day early so that we could abscond to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree for Christmas.

I couldn’t let them go without anything Christmas morning though.  I had the honor of giving Lucie her first Christmas stocking!

New Year, New Workout – Upper and Cardio

December 28, 2015 By Laura

Who’s ready to start 2016 out right with a workout?

I know, I know… it’s cliche.

I’m going with a workout post not because I’m jumping on the resolution bandwagon, but because I workout almost every day.  Why should that change in the new year?

What is different is that I’m doing more cardio and drinking less beer.  I made a promise to myself at the beginning of December that I’d lose a little of the newly wed fluff in the second year of marriage.  That second year just happens to start January 2nd!

Strange But Good Cookies… (ok, mostly just good)

December 25, 2015 By Laura

I have a visitor!!!

No, I don’t mean Aunt Ruby.

Lucie arrived late Tuesday night to stay with us for the holidays.  I’m actually writing this in advance for a change… it’s Wednesday at 3pm and jet-lagged Luce is passed out snoring.  I am so excited she’s here.  We’ve got to spend her birthday together this year, now we get Christmas and New Years!  Please someone hire her in the States so she can stay…

By the way…

Merry Christmas!

How To Make a Wine Cork Wreath

December 23, 2015 By Laura

Is it cold where you are?

Because hell froze over.

While I love to cook, I’m not especially crafty.  I even have a Pinterest board titled Stuff I’ll Never Make.  Maybe it’s the wine holiday spirit, but I decided to take the plunge with an appropriately-themed wreath.  (The theme here is wine.)

Yes, I finally did something with the bazillion wine corks we’ve been collecting.  It really wasn’t difficult and I’m so happy with how it turned out.  All that hard work drinking wine paid off!

3 simple steps to a DIY wine cork wreath. Change out the accents for every season!…

Save Your Closet and Create More Space

December 21, 2015 By Laura

This post was compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser.  All opinions are mine alone. #ZiplocSavesSpace #CollectiveBias

Those of you who’ve been following along know that I got married in January.  Vegas and I are not exactly traditional in more ways than one.  First of all, we didn’t even live in the same city when we got married.  Being all the way across the country from your spouse is excruciating!

All of that to say that when we were able to live together it was fantastic… and terrifying.  How do you combine 2 houses of stuff into one SoCal flat?!  10 months later we are still trying to find space for everything.

When I caught wind of Ziploc® Space Bags®, I was thrilled.  Their vacuum seal bags give you 3 times the storage compared to uncompressed storage volume.

Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork [Recipe]

December 18, 2015 By Laura

The slow cooker obsession continues!

I don’t think this will get old anytime soon.

I know I said I wanted to try lasagna next, but I’ve been on a BBQ kick lately.  I blame the trip to South Carolina at Thanksgiving.  There’s just nothing like Southern BBQ, and pulled pork is my favorite.  With beer… because beer in food sound a little strange sometimes, but it’s (almost) always good.

For this pork, I decided to cook it relatively plainly so that I could turn it into BBQ and tacos.  I can be serving Vegas the same thing twice!  (Really – she doesn’t like leftovers.)

Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork - quick and easy recipe you can use in at LEAST 2 different dishes for the week…

Winning in Vegas, Coconut-Vanilla Greek Yogurt Recipe + WIAW

December 16, 2015 By Laura

I’ve become a fan of Vegas.

The one I married and the city.

We escaped last week to Vegas so that I could see Reba live in concert for the first time ever.  I don’t really listen to country music anymore, but Reba was my absolute favorite for years and years.  I never got to see her live, so when I heard she was coming to Vegas I HAD to go.
