Rainy Mondays can be hard.

 

Ok, always.  Rainy Mondays are always hard…

A few weeks ago I committed to making an effort to be more positive on this most glorious day of the week and joined the diva-licious Katie in her Marvelous in My Monday link up.  This week I need to get back on that train.

What a better way to do it than recap some tasty food?  I’ve been eating good this past week, and I have a LOT to share.  This is a long one.  That’s what shai said.  Sorry… but not really. 😉

To start it off, last Sunday my friend Kathleen and I went to an underground supper club hosted by Souper Jenny. she does these once or twice a year; the secret location and chef is announced the day before the event.

Our surprise chef was Omar Powell!  He is the Chef de Cuisine at my favorite Indian Restaurant, Cardamom Hill (a James Beard nominee!), yet he is Jamaican with a French culinary training.  I was beyond excited to see what he came up with!

We arrived at the secret location (a local pasta shop, Storico Fresco) and were immediately blown away by the stunning table setting!

Before the meal, we had the chance to walk around a bit and I got in the professional photographer’s way snuck behind the counter to grab a shot of Chef Powell and Chef-Owner Asha Gomez discussing a dish.

 

The first course was a small treat that left me way too excited for the rest of the evening.  Soft farm eggs with ackee, cod, scallions, and bacon.  The flavors could have easily over-taken the egg, but they were perfectly balanced in the delicate shell.  There is nothing more fabulous than a perfectly cooked egg.

Next we were presented with a brown stewed chicken served over tun cornmeal, pickled onions, and fin herbs.

We questioned whether it was really chicken – I’ve never had a more rich, flavorful piece of chicken in my life.  This could have easily passed as a tender piece of red meat.  It doesn’t even look like chicken, does it?

I almost asked for seconds… and I did ask for the recipe!

The third dish was a Jerked Pork served with yellow yam augratin, mango, papaya jam, and all spice oil.

The flavor combination in this dish was perfection.  The jerk was just the right amount of heat against the sweet fruit, and the creamy augratin.  Augratin can often be too rich for me, but this yam was restrained and didn’t take away from the other components.

This next dish was my favorite of the night.  I think… it’s hard to choose!  It was a oxtail agnolotii (agnolotii is a stuffed pasta, like ravioli) in a pumpkin soup laced with all spice and black pepper tulie.

I’m a huge oxtail fan, and the agnolotii did not disappoint.  However, what made this dish for me was the soup.  I admired his use of all spice here because it is one I’m timid with.  A little bit can go a long way.  The burst of it here gave a depth of flavor to the soup, allowing it to stand out against a big flavor like oxtail.

Lastly, we enjoyed a sweet and savory dessert.  This was a cornmeal pone with comte cheese, “drops,” and thyme honey.

I had not heard of drops before.  Apparently they are a Jamaican street food candy.  It’s a sugar-glazed, chewy piece of coconut.  That sweetness with the thyme honey and the more savory pone and cheese was a storybook end to a memorable meal.  I’d like to say I was too stuffed to eat it all… but I ate mine and half of Kathleen’s.

I had another awesome meal with my mom last friday night.  We went to a family favorite, Everybody’s Pizza.

This place is one that will forever have a place in my heart.  They have been open since 1971 and this coming Tuesday is their last day in business.  My parents used to go on dates there in college, and later my dad would take me as a treat on Friday nights.

He’d tell me stories about what it was like “back on the day” when then had communal seating and tables of strangers would share pies and pitchers of beers.  We would eat an entire pizza and then polish off a giant order of bread pudding.  There are staving kids in Africa, right?

In honor of my dad, my mom and I had one last meal there.  We toasted my dad’s memory with beers and shared a  giant pizza.  Half cheeseless veggie, and half with extra feta cheese, portabello mushrooms, jalapenos, and meatballs.  And then a bread pudding.  We were only going to eat half… but you know that didn’t happen.  🙂

It was a great night sharing stories and eating one last meal at a local haunt.  Everybody’s, you will be sorely missed.

What do you do the morning after carb-loading?  You take a trip up Stone Mountain!  Mom and I met up with my friend Kathleen the next morning for a hike up the mountain in the gorgeous spring weather.

They were great sports, cheering me on as I ran my sprints up the steep part.  They even joined in for a couple of rounds!

The refuel was classic.  Fro-yo from Yoforia for lunch!  Fruit, dairy, protein… I got chocolate and Irish cream flavors with kiwi, strawberries, pretzels and a Reese’s egg.  Is that not the BEST topping offering?!

This deliciousness fueled my trip to the gym for a killer shoulder and glute workout.  Sprints + glutes in the gym = one tired butt.

Finally, on Sunday, I rounded out the marvelous with a day of softball.  My women’s softball team beat both male teams we played!

I think it was the lucky socks.

 

After the game we had a social, and I brough a St. Patrick’s Day treat for the team: Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes!!  These cupcakes are an annual request… they don’t have to twist my arm too hard to oblige. 😉

This is a fantastically indulgent cupcake.  The base is Guinness chocolate cake.  I fill them with Irish whiskey ganache and then ice them with an Irish cream frosting.

It was a bit of a gluttonous weekend, but coupled with a LOT of activity.  No regrets, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to normalcy this week!

In a Rut & Bacon Truffle Parmesan Popcorn

All day yesterday I thought it was Tuesday.

I am especially happy it’s Thursday today.  If it was only Wednesday this week would be reallllly long.

I don’t know what it is, but this week has seemed tedious.  Work, workouts, even cooking.  I think I need a vacation.

When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to be an adult.  No authority, no homework… I do what I want!  Wellll… the thing I didn’t realize is that you actually DO have to answer to people (bosses, bills, cops…) and there really IS homework (work you were handed at the end of the day, house work, working on my fitness, other obligations).

I’m not necessarily complaining.  I normally love working out and I’m happiest when my job is busy.  It’s just this week.  This cold.  Bad dates.  Girl Scout Cookie cravings (I swear those little people are stalking me at the grocery store!).  I need a vacation.  Some place warm.

Thankfully, I have friends like Kat to cheer my up.  Not only will she meet me for a glass of wine and a second dinner after a bad date, but she also write a guest post (see below), that perfectly describes my feelings right now.

So now you should quit reading my whining and listen to Kat, who reads my mind and makes me feel more connected.


It’s part of human nature to sometimes feel like “no one gets you.”  We have to make an effort to realize that it’s not true!  You’re never alone – someone will always be able to “get you” if you just reach outside yourself.  (Editor’s note: get outta my head, Kat!)

Being A Person

So, I have to share – I was in a RUT! Every kind of rut – a running rut, a yoga rut, a dating rut, a food rut, and opening up about my feelings rut.  UGH!

How to kick yourself out of a rut?  First steps first – admit it to yourself… then tell people!  When people relate to you, they often offer suggestions that help you pull out of your rut and kick you into high gear with a new, better attitude.

And having an amazing Friday night girls night opening up to some of your closest friends and sharing a lot of wine your feelings doesn’t hurt either.

To get out of my running rut, I decided to run some new places, with new friends, and make better, solid plans!  This helped my running rut because it made me want to run even more than I already usually want to!

I made a plan with a new friend, and a woman from yoga.  BOY did that help! 🙂  It made me get back to my smile-when-I-run mental amazing state, and enjoy my solo runs even more. (I know, crazy, running with people made me enjoy solo runs more???)

Have you ever noticed that smiling literally makes you happy?  It’s true.  Whatever muscles you use when you smile trigger something in your body, that triggers something in your brain… let the experts tell you about it.  It can also make you younger, prettier, friendlier, and on and on.  The point is – SMILE.  (Editor’s note: this actually works.  I was skeptic, but after Kat told me this I grinned my way through my 8 hour race!)

I ran 15 miles on Monday (Yo-Run-Ga! – 7 before yoga & 8 after).  On my way home, I was almost GIGGLING.  I was smiling so big and bright.  I love love love to run.  It makes me high.  BUT, not everyone can relate to that.  So, apply it to your favorite thing/activity!  Smile while you do it!

Now, to get out of the yoga rut. I was taking the same classes over and over and over. I was hitting a plateau – not trying as hard, not getting much stronger, not learning new poses. Perfect solution – try a new teacher!

Turns out I didn’t even really like the new teacher I tried, but I learned something and it helped me to enjoy my regular classes even more.

I want to learn to do this!

I really want to start learning new poses and breaking out of my shell.  Maybe I will try a new studio or ask some of my favorite instructors for tips.  I know I’m strong enough and flexible enough to do more!

The dating rut?  I have no idea how to get myself out of this one.  Ask someone else for advice on this.  (Editor’s note: Good Lord, don’t ask me. #fail)

Hey Girl Boyfriend Material

The food rut!  Okay, seriously, who else ends up buying the same groceries over and over and over?!  It’s like I have been reusing the same list… forever!  And you know what I make?  The same meals.  I know, shocking!

To get out of the food rut, I have had a few strategies:

  1. Eat out more! If you do this, you will draw inspiration from menus, and eat different things.
  2. Shop in the frozen section.  No, don’t actually spend a ton of money buying the frozen meals, but use the ideas to go buy stuff to make similar, more fun items.
  3. Buy something, anything, that you wouldn’t normally buy, then go online and search the ingredient for recipe ideas.  The advent of the internet is glorious!  (Editor’s note: So true!  I just bought curry leaves = awesome.)

One other thing I like to do, is find something I like, and do it better!  For example, I had Bacon Cracker Jack Popcorn (below) at Harper Station.  UGH – It could be done SO much better.  (Editor’s note: I had the same thing at Holeman & Finch 2 weeks ago… and thought the same thing!)  So I later made Bacon Truffle Parmesan Popcorn – WIN.

I couldn’t help but recreate it after coming home to a 12.5 pound bag of popcorn on my door step, thanks to my friend Jimmy!

Popcorn is one of my favorite foods.  In fact, I eat it almost every day!  Not always as decadent, usually just some EVOO and Salt.

Mine was SO much better.  First of all, the “Cracker Jack” from H. Harper Station was way too sweet.  Second of all, their bacon was NOT crispy – and it was COLD. Turn-off!  Third, who doesn’t love truffle-parmesan anything… and then you add bacon!?  AMAZING WIN!

And I got the idea for the cute little serving cups online – bonus if you’re going for portion control. I refilled my “personal size” like 3 times.  (Editor’s note: Bring me some!!!  Inviting a friend helps with portion control!)

Bacon Truffle Parmesan Popcorn

  • 1/4 C popcorn kernels
  • 1 T coconut oil
  • 1 T truffle salt
  • 4 strips of bacon, cooked crispy and chop finely
  • 1 C shredded Parmesan

Cook the popcorn in the coconut oil; this gives it a better texture.

Then coat the popcorn with truffle salt.  Add bacon (finely chopped and crispy) and Parmesan.

Use a large spoon to stir it all together.  Devour.

Notes: This is not a healthy meal option.  You could also sub the truffle parm and do bacon chocolate popcorn!  YUM!  Next time.

Editor’s note: Make it vegan with bacon bits (yes, they’re vegan) and nutritional yeast!

My Figure Delay + WIAW

Knowing when to hold off is important.

 

But I really hate it. 

Yesterday I did a leg session with my trainer (I am walking like a granny today).  I was going to do my next figure competition in March, just 4 weeks from now.  We talked about my progress and decided to delay .

My upper body has filled out a lot.  Shoulders are wider, back more developed… he actually said my upper body is competition-ready now.  BUT do you see my butt?  It’s not catching up.  Why, oh why doesn’t chocolate cake go straight to my butt and legs?

So we made the call to hold off until May to give me more time to grow so that I can present better in a couple more months.  We’ll be going super heavy, making some TBD diet changes, and focusing more on my rear.  The diets changes I had made (mostly more fat) have been good, but the gains haven’t been quite to the point we need.

I’m disappointed.  My bum bums me out… but I know my trainer is right.  🙁

In happier news, I finally have a WIAW post where I got to eat at home!  I don’t really mind being on the road, but not eating out of a baggie is a welcome change.

Meal 1:

I’m still loving my morning cocktail (apple cider vinegar, water, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos).

30 mins later I made my new favorite breakfast: toasted Ezekial English muffin with some warmed no-salt deli turkey, nutritional yeast sauce, and a runny egg.  I ate it with a side of sweet lime.  Sweet lime = Strange But Good.

  • 1 T nutritional yeast
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Cumin
  • Cayenne
  • Liquid smoke
  • Pinch of xanthan gum (to thicken)

 

Meal 2:

I really love having salmon with fruit for meal 2.  Today I ate it with my sweet lime, raw pepitas (pumpkin seeds), basil, and a little cayenne.  Sweet lime really is amazing – like a mild orange.

Meal 3:

Lunch was post-workout, so it was a Carrot Cake Whey creation.  This is one of my go-tos. I love carrots.

  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 C greek yogurt
  • 1/4 C raw oatmeal
  • Enough water to mix

 

Then I decided I deserved a little treat – kombucha!  I drank it in the car with the moon roof open.  I’m loving being home where it’s 60 degrees and sunny by lunch!  I re-set my HRM post-workout to catch the leg day after-burn.  125 cals in the hour following my workout!

Meal 4:

After talking to my trainer, we are going to be looking at keeping the fats high.  This way I can shovel in more calories without being too stuffed to want to eat (which is what happened when we tried to drastically increase carbs).  This is the fun part!  I made bison burgers… cooked with bacon.

The bottle in the background is Robbie’s sugar-free, low-sodium BBQ sauce I found at Whole Foods.  I’d made my own before my first competition, but when I saw this I had to try it.  I like mine better, but this wasn’t bad!

Meal 5-7:

That’s not a typo – this was like 3 meals in one.  I had dinner at Lure with local bloggers and friends, Beth and Amy.  I love these girls – we laughed through the entire meal.

When we sat down we were gifted with a giant punch bowl from the owner.  It was some sort of apple cider and rum concoction, and it was absolutely fabulous.  We must be getting old, because we actually couldn’t finish it all.

For my app I ordered brussels.  It’s actually a side item, but it sounded so good.  Roasted brussels with grapes, pumpkin seeds, and lemon aioli.  I loved the flavor together, but the aioli was so rich that I only finished half (it was a HUGE serving!).  There was some (unpictured) sesame bread involved too.

Dinner was a delicious grilled Arctic Char fillet coated in berbere spice served with young carrots and farro verde.  I almost licked my plate… but saved a little room for dessert.  A chocolate and peanut butter mousse cake.  It was so good I forgot to take a pic until we’d eaten all but 2 bites of the slice.  Bad blogger.

The protein count for the day: 150.1g.  I think… you never know with restaurant meals.  Either way, I sufficiently refueled after a brutal leg day.

Butternut Banana Protein Shake

There is something in the water.

Ok, there are probably lots of things in our water… I don’t think about it.

This weekend I must have been drinking the ‘roid water because I was hitting PRs all over the gym.  I don’t feel any different in terms of ability, but for some reason the weights were lighter these past few days.

My Saturday PRs were: (unassisted) dumbbell chest press, include bench press with a twist, and pullovers.  Then on Sunday I PR’d on the read delt machine.  I’d been stuck at the same weight forever… but I turned up the music and told the thing is was going to move Cee Lo-style.

The only thing I’ve changed is to make sure that immediately following a workout I have whey protein with a complex carb.  That works for me because my favorite post-workout snack is a protein shake.

I had not been making many – it’s too cold – BUT Heather gave me a good reason to being them back into my life with her Meatless Monday A-Z ingredient: Xanthan Gum!

Xanthan gum is a thickening agent and it prevent separation.  These qualities make it a perfect smoothie/shake addition!  If you read the ingredient list for most ice creams and milkshakes, you’ll find Xanthan gum, as it gives these desserts a fabulous creamy texture.

Bananas are often used to make shakes thicker in the healthy-living community.  I used it in my Oatmeal Cookie Shake!  Never one to settle for “normal,” I began using alternatives like butternut squash or sweet potatoes to thicken my protein-laced creations.  What I never thought to do until this weekend was use BOTH.

Sweet banana and butternut make for one fabulous combination.  It’s almost like a cold pie filling!  I loved it with the almond extract – it makes everything taste like cookies to me.

This shake is especially good to have post workout – you get your 20g of protein from the powder, carbs from the banana and butternut, potassium for muscle recovery from the banana, and anti-inflammatory benefits from ginger and cinnamon.

A little bit of Xanthan goes a long way here with the already-creamy banana and butternut combo.  What results is a treat so fantastically thick you’ll need to eat it with a spoon.

If you’re so inclined – and I am ALWAYS inclined – you can toss in some spinach for an extra serving of greens.  You can’t taste it.  Don’t be scared.

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/3 C butternut squash, pre-cooked
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2-1/4 in piece fresh ginger
  • 1/8 tsp Xanthan gum
  • 6-7 drops liquid Stevia (optional)
  • Spinach (optional)
  • Ice + water, to taste

Place everything in a high-speed blender (I used my Vitamix) and blend until smooth.  

Transfer to a glass and enjoy!

Awareness in the Long Run + Sweet Potato-Pecan Mac N Cheese

I know I’ve already complained…

 

But it’s really flippin’ cold.

Honestly, it isn’t TERRIBLE.  I have a lot to be happy about.  I made it through security with my questionable stash, had a productive day at my client’s office, and had a bangin’ workout.

Not too shabby for a hotel gym that only had dumbbells, eh?  I sure was happy to have a homemade chicken burger, celery, and snow peas waiting for me in the room after that burn.

I was also happy to have my Pop Snax.  You can find these in the children’s food aisle at Whole Foods.  Don’t judge!  Kid food travels well and is typically low in sodium and sugar!

Even better?  When I asked an employee if she’d tried them before, she said she hadn’t but that I could try them for FREE.  She game me the whole container.  Yet another reason I ♥ that place.

There are so many ways to be self-aware.  I think it’s increasingly natural for many of us to be aware of our food and what we put into our bodies, and we are generally aware of our basic needs and desires.  For example… You could be aware of whether or not you are cat person or if you are more like a cat.  Laura and I both feel that the following photo describes both of us (Editor’s note: Me?  Never… HA!):

Okay, okay, really I was trying to find a way to fit this in!

 

But I’m talking about a different kind of awareness…the kind where you have to pay attention… to yourself.

Instead of looking at what others are doing or saying and judging them, looking at yourself and wondering why you feel that way about something said or done or the situation you are in.  Then, don’t judge it or try to change it.  Just accept it.  Whether you’re happy, sad, or in pain from a work out (or something in life), it’s okay to accept it.

I started another 30-day yoga challenge on Saturday.  It was a spur of the moment decision, but I’m ready to make some changes.  What changes, you ask!?  Well, I’m not even sure I know.  I just know that I feel ready to change even more for the better, keeping with my New Year’s theme of taking crap off my plate to enhance the quality of what I do take on.

Yoga makes me run smoother, love better, and enjoy life.

A good life

 

I want to be more aware of the way I respond to other people and situations and why.  I want to be more aware of my stressors and triggers that throw me into a mood, a frenzy, or some other state of discomfort.  I want to listen to my body’s needs and desires in a new way.  Yoga really helps me to concentrate on feelings that flow naturally and become more aware of them.

My goal in all this is to learn to love myself and my life more.  I think my new “awareness” will help me to be more understanding, forgiving, and loving – of myself and others – in a unique new way.  In the physical long runs and in the long run of life, awareness leads to growth – physical, mental, emotional.  My theory?  This is how to live a long and fulfilling life.

 

Now… onto some PHYSICAL and FOOD!  Because I also personally think a good life is also when you get to spend as much time as possible outside being active and enjoying good food!  (Editor’s note; AMEN to that!)

RECAP!

I had some good times with old friends and acquaintances, we went to Napa and I got to visit Sullivan Vineyards (that Laura recommended) and joined the wine club, saw the Golden Gate from the overlook in Sausalito at night, explored the whole city on foot, did a trail race, had a picnic at Cowgirl Creamery (Editor’s note: No you didn’t!  Lucky!!!), did more exploring, and rode on an old school cable car.  The trail run was the most beautiful, and the steepest I have ever done.

The SteepRavine was the steepest and hardest, but also the most beautiful trail run I have ever done!  It was a HUGE race.  I chose the 25K distance.  But… well…. as I told Laura and some other bloggers last week, I went off course, and ended up running an extra couple of miles.  Oops!!  But you can’t really be upset about that when it was THAT beautiful!  (Editor’s note:  You probably did it on purpose ;))

Some of the most inspiring moments in the race showed up when you least expected them.  I really paid attention to my body.  I had to stop and adjust my food.  It was freezing, and then hot, and then freezing.  But I got to meet a lot of cool people out there, one of whom told me that you usually can’t see so far because it’s too foggy.  Boy did I luck out!

My friends Sara and Jenny were kind enough to drive me out there and wait on me while I finished.  And then we had an amazing little picnic afterwards.  They really made my trip enjoyable.  They were spectacular hosts who made me feel at home.  The way they made me feel comfortable, made me feel calm, safe, and happy.  Definitely good!  They also helped me with my itinerary for my last day, where I got to visit the Ferry Building!  CHECK OUT ALL THESE COOL LOCAL SAN FRANCISCO GOODS!

I came back feeling extremely food inspired.  Jenny and Sara took me to a place called Homeroom Mac and Cheese.   Yes, that’s what they make!  They specialize in Mac N Cheese!!!!  Check out their menu!  It’s inventive and awesome.  I took a spin on it and created two of my own last Friday.  I made a Sweet Potato Pecan Baked Mac n Cheese and a Tomato Basil Pesto Baked Mac n Cheese.

I personally liked the sweet potato better, so I HAVE to share this recipe.  Let’s pretend I actually measured most of this!

Sweet Potato Mac 'n Cheese

Sweet Potato-Pecan Baked Mac ‘n Cheese

  • 1 egg (tofu would work)
  • 1 ½ C milk or milk substitute (I used coconut milk!)
  • ¼ C fat-free sour cream (or substitute)
  • ~2 T brown rice flour
  • ~2 T butter
  • 8-10 oz of Gluten Free Elbow Macaroni Noodles
  • CHEESE – LOTS OF GRATED CHEESE! (please grate your own… it DOES make a difference) – I used 1 C Cheddar, ¼ cup fontina, and ¼ cup smoked gouda
  • 1 sweet potato
  • Pecans to top
  • Salt and pepper to taste (and a little cayenne)

 

Pre-heat oven to 375.  Prepare an 8×8 pan for the mac.

Cube your sweet potato into roughly ¾ inch cubes and spread out on a baking sheet.  Place in oven.  I did not season or oil – plenty of seasoning and oils from the rest of the meal!

Boil noodles according to package instructions.  Make them al dente; don’t over-cook.  Strain, rinse with cold water.  Strain again. Set aside.

Now the yummy part!  Take your butter and flour and mix together in a sauce pan over medium heat.  USE A WHISK!  This makes a delicious roux.  Don’t let it get TOO brown, but you want to do this for a good base flavor.

Reduce the heat to medium low, add milk, and mix until combined.  Wait a minute for the temperature to drop because you don’t want your egg to cook!  Keep whisking.

Start slowly adding your cheese.  You could add even more than I recommended.  Add all but ¼ cup of the cheddar (reserve that for the topping).

Once all the cheese is good and mixed in, you should begin to feel excited, very excited about the creamy delectableness.  Add salt and pepper and a bit of cayenne, if desired.  Paprika or cinnamon would also be good here.  Taste it.  Make sure it tastes good.  This is an important step people – do NOT skip it!  Whisk again.

Pull the sweet potatoes out of the oven.  You want them to still be pretty firm, like the texture of an apple.  Add the sweet potatoes AND the noodles to the sauce deliciousness.  Mix up.  Put in 8×8 baking dish.

Sprinkle the reserved cheddar on top and about ¼ to ½ cup of pecans – however many you like!

Bake at 375 for about 40 minutes.

Note: When you pull it out, it WILL BE JIGGLY!  That’s okay – it’s because it’s creamy.  Wait 5-10 minutes then serve and devour!

Making Monday Marvelous

Mondays are not my favorite.

 

They are second only to Tuesday in their suck-factor.

This week I’m making an effort to be more positive about the start to the week and joining up with the diva-licious Katie in her Marvelous Monday link up.

After an awesome weekend, I think the glow should carry over to Monday!

It all started Thursday night with a ATL blogger dinner.  I met up with Lee, Kat, Heather, Alayna, Stacy, and… HEATHER and her boyfriend, who are visiting for the weekend from Tennessee!!!  We ate at a local Ethiopian place called Desta (3086 Briarcliff Road Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30329; 404.929.0011).

If you’ve never had Ethiopian food, think of Indian food… but without the cardamom and coconut flavors.  And with fingers – you scoop your food with injera, a bread made from teff flour.  (No worries – they has hand sanitizer at the table.)  Injera is just teff flour and water mixed together and left to ferment for 2-3 days.  It has a light, spongy texture and a slightly sour taste due to the fermentation.  I know that sounds odd, but it works.  Kind of like kombucha.  It’s also really rich in iron!

Round two of the marvelous happened Friday night.  After a looooong day, I met up with Heather and her boyfriend again for a fun dinner at The Spence (75 5th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30308; 404.892.9111).  I don’t repeat restaurants often, but this one is in the rotation.  It was started by Richard Blais of Top Chef fame, and actually lives up to the hype!

Here are a few of my favorites from what we ordered:

  • Fois gras with 5-spice and candied quince
  • Butternut squash agnolotti with pig trotter, brussle leaves, and parsnip puree
  • Blood orange and champagne cake
  • Milk chocolate, peanut, and burnt banana ice cream (I can’t eat here without ordering this)

 

The icing on that cake came when I checked my mail that evening.  Not one but TWO special deliveries.  Nuttzo sent me an entire jar of my favorite nut butter (I’m not just saying that).  This stuff is pricey, but I SWEAR it’s worth every penny.  It was my first “treat” after my figure competition last year.

The second package was from Chobani.  They sent over a sampling of their new flavors and a spoon.  I was probably too excited about getting a spoon in the mail… but it’s a really nice, heavy spoon.  I normally don’t eat flavored yogurt due to the sugar content, but I’ve been using these as condiments and eating these 1/2 at a time.  My favorite flavor?  The fig with orange zest – I love that it has real pieces of fig!

The awesome didn’t stop there!  

Saturday night I took my broccoli Heather, her BF, and another friend to a place I’ve been really excited to try.  7 Lamps (3400 Wooddale Dr NE #217, Atlanta, GA 30326; 404.467.8950) was opened by one of my favorite local chefs, Drew Van Leuvan.  I used to eat at ONE Midtown all the time when he was at the helm.

This was one of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory.  It was a TON of food, but it was great to get to sample a little bit of everything:

  • Butter-dipped radishes with mustard aioli and pickled Fiddlehead Ferns
  • Smoked ruby beets with medjool dates, bacon jam, oj fennel, and bucheron
  • Mortadella mousse in Sicilian pistachio macaroons with grilled baguette, bourbon mustard, and pickled grapes and celery
  • Sashimi of smoked Wild Salmon with navel orange, grapefruit, avocado, and pea shoots
  • Lobster roll with celery aioli on a steamed brioche bun
  • “Off the Menu” burger that is 50% brisket, 50% top round, and topped with housemade Thousand Island, caramelized onions, B & B pickles, and a grilled cheese gratin… and served with hand cut cottage fries
  • Spicy lamb meatballs with adzuki beans, sage, and brasied pearl onions
  • Savory crepes with wood grilled tuscan kale, vidalia onion, gruyere gratin, smoked vinaigrette
  • Red Dawn – Four Roses bourbon, pur likor spiced blood orange liqueur, benedictine, and black walnut bitters

 

The beet dish was a fantastic combination of flavors and textures.  You all know I love salty and sweet, so the bacon with the dates was a huge win for me.  It was well-balanced with the tangy OJ fennel.  The creaminess from the boucheron against the still-firm beets made the dish that much more fun to eat..

I’m sad that my favorite dish was the worst picture.  I was too excited to eat it!  The mortadella mousse macaroons were out of this world.  It was you childhood bologna sandwich, all grown up.  A little sweet, a little salty, and a perfect chew from the macaroons.  I could have eaten plates of these.

The burgers were ordered by the boys, but they shared a bite.  This may be a contender for the best burger in ATL (certainly better than H&F, and right there with Bocado). It’s not on the menu and they don’t like to serve them during dinner service… but you should order it anyway.  My eyes rolled back into my head upon taking a bite of the juicy burger.  It was the sort of burger that gets all over your face, but you don’t care because you’re too busy reveling in its deliciouness.

There is room for improvement on the salmon dish and the lobster.  Both were missing something… the smokiness wasn’t apparently in the salmon, which I think would have made the dish.  As it were, it fell flat on my palate.  The lobster claw meat itself and the steamed bun were both fantastic.  It simply needed something else to lift it.  A little bit of heat or tang added to this would make it close to perfect.

The service was great.  Or server, Joseph, was attentive and clearly passionate about the menu.  “Head Mixtress” Arianne was slammed behind the bar, but took the time to talk with us about the drink selection.  Her suggestions were spot-on!  I’d come back just for a cocktail… but I’d probably have to order more macaroons too…

 

The night wasn’t over yet!  We moved on the Victory Sandwich Bar, where we met up with a friend of Heather’s BF.  Here’s the thing about Victory.  They have Jack & Coke slushies.  A victory, indeed.

Cramming 101: Endurance Training and Recovery

Endurance isn’t for the weak.

 

It also probably should not be prepared for in a cram session.

This Saturday I’m doing an adventure/orienteering race that my cousin talked me in to.  8 hours in the woods with a GPS.  They give you the start, the finish, and a couple of mandatory check points along the way.  It will be running, hiking, mountain biking, and canoeing.  I hope I live.

Some of you may not know it, but before I got into lifting seriously, I was a runner.  I was a decently fast 5K’er, loved adventure races (hellllloooo Tough Mudder) and ran a few Halfs.  I wanted to run a full but one day my knee said no.  If I ever want to run distances again I need to have surgery.  That won’t be happening.

 

All of this to say, I haven’t been running in 8 months!  Saturday that changed.  My cousin recommended I get 6 hours of continuous exercise/training in before the race.  Cramming.

Kat agreed to keep me company for half of that by taking me on one of her trail run/hikes.

13 STEEP miles in 3 hours.  We hiked up steep incline filled with wet leaves, leapt over creeks, and ran power lines.  It was the perfect day for it – record high 75 degree temps and partly cloudy.

I was sore half way through.  

 

Nutrition is something I struggle with.  I have a hard time eating or drinking during a run – it makes me slosh and cramp.  In our 3 hour run, I just ate a mini über Lara Bar (the one with the nuts) and sipped some water.  Will have to be sure to take in more fuel while biking and canoeing this weekend.

We finished (thank you, Kat, for being patient with me) and did a little yoga to loosen up.  I chugged water.

Kat dropped me at my place where I ran up to pee, change shoes, and eat.  In that order.

I broke out an old favorite for fuel:

Sweet Potato “Cereal”

  • 1/2 sweet potato, bakes and cubed
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Unsweetened almond milk

 

Place sweet potato in a cereal bowl.  Mix together remaining ingredients in a separate bowl, adding milk until the mixture thins to a milk consistency.

Pour protein milk over the ‘taters and inhale.

 

Then I grabbed my bike, water bottle, and a GU and took off.  (Note: Espresso GU is tasty!)

Gingerly set out may be a better way to describe it.  I was tired.  What I considered to be “flat” ground before seems quite hilly.  I rode about 15 miles (had to stop for air in my tires and forgot to re-start my RunKeeper app).  After I loosened up a bit, it turned into a fun ride.  I followed Atlanta’s new Beltline Path and got to see the city in a whole new way.  I even took a tour to ride the Krog Street Tunnel (infamous for its graffiti):

I decided to get back on the path and head back when I rode past a woman on her porch yelling at her neighbor, “Don’t mess with me or I will HURT your dog!”  Scary lady.

Honestly, after I got back within a mile of my place I’d convinced myself to call it quits at 5 hours.  I was tired, sore, bored, and hungry.  Then I ran into Carol and her sweet puppy Bailey!  She was walking home from an afternoon at the dog park, so I joined her to catch up.  30 mins walking there, then another 30 back to my house = 6 hours DONE.

 

When I got home I was famished.  I would have eaten my right hand (I’m left-handed).  Instead, I stood in the door of my fridge and ate half a rotisserie chicken with my bare hands.  After washing my hands, of course.

And finally it was dinner time.  Burger topped with avocado, black bean dip, jalapeno, and pico de gallo, with a side of house-made crinkly-crispy sweet potato fries dipped in sriracha and mustard.  Then… there may have been an (unpictured) apple pie milkshake.  I’ve been boycotting the burger trend (I HATE Yeah! Burger), but Grindhouse Killer Burgers changed my mind.

Yes, it’s Junk-Free January.  I needed calories… and it was junk-free-ish.  The meat for the burger is freshly ground by a small North Carolina producer and delivered every day, and the bun is a soft potato roll made by a Pennsylvania Dutch bakery.  The sauces are homemade.  The shakes are homemade.  I have no regrets.

Then I crashed.  And got hungry again.  Banana.  Cottage Cheese.  Protein powder.  Cinnamon.  Face plant in bed.

Then, in the wee hours of Monday morning, I got the stomach flu.  I think I would have gotten sick despite the cram session… but it probably didn’t help.  In the future, I’ll plan better.  Thank you all SO much for the well-wishes!

2 days ’til race day!!! I’m eating my carbs and doing to light workouts to prepare.

5 Happy Friday Thoughts

 

1. Calee designed my bangin’ new logo (you may have seen it here on my #WorkItOut feature).  I cannot wait to begin rolling it out all over the place! 

 

2. Kristina @ Spa Bettie tried out my TVP “Oatmeal” and loved it!  It kind of made me feel like a rockstar since she is so brilliant in the kitchen.  Check out her Chocolate Mint creation:

 

3. Playing with my food makes me happy.  P28 Protein Bagel with peanut flour spread and a bacon face.  Apple slice hair.

Yes, I’m 29, I live alone, and I amuse myself by making faces in my breakfast. #reachingnewlows

 

4. Last night I met up with Lee and Tina for sushi at Sushi House Hayakawa on Buford Highway (Atlanta’s ethnic food haven).  It was all tasty, but my favorite was the spicy tuna roll pictured on the left.

Side note: everyone with Tina luck on her Half this weekend!

 

5. And the big announcement… I finally got my new car!!!  It’s my first “space gray” car, but my 3rd BMW.

What can I say… I’m brand loyal.
