Indulging in 2012

December 31, 2011 By Laura

Happy New Years Eve!!!

In case you do get a little over-zealous while welcoming 2012…

Top 5 Hangover Helpers:

  1. Sleep – roll over and pray it goes away
  2. Hydrate – before you roll over and go back to sleep, chug a big glass of water or Gatorade (taking a Motrin or Excedrin Migraine with it may not be a bad idea either)
  3. Exercise – nothing works better than to sweat out all those toxins (not that I would know)
  4. Hair of the Dog – there’s a reason bloody’s and mimosas are breakfast drinks.  They work.  Just watch out or you’ll only have a worse hang over the following day!
  5. Kombucha – It may be in my head, but I swear this stuff lessens a hangover.  Is it the tummy-pleasing enzymes?  The fermentation?  The carbonation?  Who cares.  It works.

Other ideas include: Waffle House, coffee, (caffeine), Pedialyte.  Mom says orange juice.  Baby sis says Emergen-C before going out and pickles the next day.

You can thank us later (when your head stops pounding).

In all the excitement I almost forgot to post about my December Foodie Penpal treats!

The amazing Rachael @ The Avid Appetite sent me a package not to be forgotten!

In it was homemade marshmallows (which were gone in about 30 minutes!), a fantastic loaf of banana bread, KIND bars, and a couple of holiday teas.  Sometimes I think bloggers have ESP – how did she know that banana bread is my favorite loaf and that KIND bars have been on my “to try” list for literally a year?  Thanks, Rachel!!!  And thank you for organizing, Lindsay!

Want a Foodie Penpal of your own?

Please send an email to Lindsay @ theleangreenbean@gmail.com and include the following information:

-Your full name
-Your email address
-Your blog name/address
-Your twitter handle (if applicable)

She will need to hear from you by January 4th – penpals will be notified on January 5th!

Thank you for all of the wonderful comments yesterday AND for the votes to land me in the FoodBuzz Top 9 today (check it out here) – you guys made my 2011!

What are your big plans tonight?

Any hangover cures to share? 🙂

Running and Winning

August 1, 2011 By Laura

It’s another Recap Monday!

Yes, I will reveal the lucky 4 NuNatural giveaway winners… at the end.  Bwhahaha.  (Yes, I realize you can simply scroll down.)

Saturday’s People’s Health Day 5K was a good one.  I was a little worried when I signed up because the wesite looks like a cult recruitment tool. 🙂  It turns out that it was a well-organized race and event.

The course was hilly, but fun because there was lots of scenery to enjoy.  Even better – I got to participate in it with fellow ATL bloggers Lee, Lindsay, and Carol!

Source: www.atlantarunningmom.com

Guess who else raced?  Mena Suvari (of American Beauty fame).  I’m not going to lie… I’m so out of touch with pop culture that I had to come home and google her.  She won 1st place in the 20-35 age group…

… because I  won an overall female award and they wouldn’t give 2 medals to you. 🙂  2nd place!!!  Admittedly, it was a small, slow race… but I’ll that what I can get!

Source: www.atlantarunningmom.com

Stats:

  • Distance – 3.14 miles
  • Time – 24:21 mins
  • Avg Pace – 7:45

The People’s Health Day didn’t end there.  5K participants were given 4 tickets that could be traded for goodies from about 10 vendors.  Juice Plus (my fav supplement!) was there, along with a few local restaurants and farms.

The blogger contingent went crazy for the 180 Farm tent (check out their website – they have really great story to tell).  I ended up with extra tickets from a friend who left early and I ended up with a rockstar bag ‘o treats:

  • Orange cherry tomatoes (they have a slightly citrusy taste!)
  • Peppers – cayenne, jalapeno, green bell, purple bell, and a mirasol
  • A dozen fresh eggs
  • Via Elisa pasta sauce (from the Nature’s Garden‘s booth)

All of that for 6 tickets and a $25 race number!  That pasta sauce alone is ~$7 in Whole Foods!  (Side note: Atlanta-based Via Elisa makes some of the best pasta sauce you can buy in a jar.)

We didn’t hang out much longer following the awards because we had to get to the Atlanta Blogger Lunch at R. Thomas.  (You can read about my obsession with thoughts on R. Thomas here.)

From left to right: Lauren, Carol, Alayna, Lee, Katy, Lindsay, me, Laura (reader), Tina, Kristy, Katie and Brooke.

Special thanks to Brooke’s husband for taking this shot and to Brooke for sharing the photo with everyone!

My meal was a delicious tempeh fajita:

We had a great time eating, taking pics of our food (patrons enjoyed staring at 12 women simultaneously taking pic of their meals), and chatting.

The last meet up had a smaller attendance AND we’ve added several more locals since.  I’m amazed and how big the group is now – and this wasn’t even all of the local bloggers!

There Ought to Be a Law

July 5, 2011 By Laura

There ought to be a law against going to work the day after the 4th any holiday.

At least  I have yesterday’s appearance on the Food Buzz Top 9 to boost me this morning!

That hummus really was good.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who buzzed me and WELCOME to new visitors!

______________________________________________________________________________

Yesterday’s Peachtree Road Race was really good.

I ran the world’s largest 10K in 51:08.  A new PR!

A time under 50 mins would have been awesome, but I can’t complain about anything sub-55.  And I finished in plenty of time to cheer on a lot of the finishers. 🙂

Post-race I met up with some good friends and enjoyed brunch their company.  Brunch was terrible – they ran out of EGGS, which meant I didn’t get to eat much of anything until 4 hours after finishing the race.

Fine if you run out of food, but at least tell me so I can order something different.  Like the spine my stomach was eating.

We made up for it in beverages fun at the next location.

The sign didn’t lie – it was the bar we were looking for.

Diesel (870 North Highland Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, 404-815-1820) provided a knowledgable bartender and possibly the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had.

The D’Yer Mak’Er consisted of mozzarella, roasted tomato goat cheese, swiss, cheddar & bacon on rye.  The rye made the sandwich… YUM.

How about some icing on the grilled cheese cake?  Watermelon beer.

Our awesome bartender recommended this Hell or High Watermelon Beer by 21st Amendment after I requested something with flavor, but light.  Not too much alcohol content (who really needs an 11% alc beer?).  Not too sweet.

It hit the spot.  I thought the watermelon would make it too sweet for me, but it was much lighter than many of the “berry” flavored beers out there.

The watermelon flavoring was more “real” than candied/artificial.  It is a wheat beer, but remains light and crisp Nice amount of bubble.  Nothing overly complex, but a refreshing beer after a long day.

***

It rained last night so no fire works for me… the 9.5 hours of sleep I got instead was incredible.

How was your weekend?  Did you get to enjoy a race and/or fireworks?
