Clean Eating Revelations + WIAW

October 18, 2017 By Laura

Eating clean pays off.

Who knew?

5 mile (uphill) hike with Teresa.

I hate when doing what I know I should… actually works.  So annoying.

I made a big commitment to being super clean about a month ago.  As in, I’ve had one cheat day in 17 days.  That post I wrote about macros and the free calculator?  That’s actually what I do.  And it’s what I used to do before my little “I got married, moved to California, celebrated it all, and tore two ACLs” phase.

Is it a phase if it’s been almost 3 years?

Anyway, in 3-ish weeks I’m down 8 pounds and 3 % body fat.  I’m also UP half a percent in muscle mass.  So here are my words of wisdom for the day:  Eating clean works.  Consistent workout work.   Common sense works.

But you came here for for food.  Check out my day of eats below, and be sure to link up to Jenn’s WIAW baby at the bottom!

WIAW - New

Breakfast:

As per usual, Vegas brought me coffee to bed.  Then I made our morning cocktails.  It’s become an addiction – even Vegas agrees!  Don’t mind the murky looks of it… 😉

Morning Cocktail

Here’s what goes in it:

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar
  2. BCAAs (orange flavor)
  3. Nano Greens
  4. Gelatin-Collagen
  5. Cayenne
  6. Water

This delicious superfood pudding is finally going to be posted Friday!!!  I’m a little addicted.

Lunch:

After my leg day, I came home and scarfed down the first thing I could find.  Leftover chicken meatballs and salad with zucchini hummus as dressing.

Chicken meatballs and salad

Snack:

Soup.  I have a ton of Butternut-Apple Soup to eat after remaking it for the blog.  Here’s the original recipe, if you’re interested.

Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

Dinner:

Even Vegas liked this healthy dinner!

There was a post-dinner snack of protein pudding.  Just a mix of chocolate pea protein, cinnamon, and water.  I’m typing this and watching This Is Us… so no pic. 😉

An InLinkz Link-up

***

It’s still 85 degrees here… but I’m all over the fall food anyway.

Do you ever surprise yourself by doing what you already know works?

What’s the first thing you drink in the morning?  Bonus points if you say vodka.

I think I really need some butternut squash soup now. And apples are such a wonderful addition! I think I surprise myself often by not being afraid of my hunger and feeding it. Sometimes I just forget how easy it is to want to ‘restrict’ and be skinny with my history of an ED, but every time I get hungry and then feed my hunger it’s incredible how wonderful it is not to be hungry all the time.

It’s hands down my favorite fall soup!

Oh I so need to get my eating back in check. I feel better when I eat better, just to break the cycle, that’s the hardest for me. Great looking meals!

You’re so right! I’m taking 21 days and forcing myself. I’m on day 20 and it’s gotten SO much easier.

Yes it does! Congratulations on the weight loss and muscle gain and having the cohones to not have a cheat day everyday 🙂

I actually drink ACV in my water first thing in the morning every single day! in fact, when the ACV bottle is empty and I miss a day, I feel weird lol. That’s a really big difference you have made in a short amount of time – big congrats to you!

Uh unfortunately after this weekend I was reminded when I don’t eat my best I feel awful. We hosted a party on Saturday and I had all the snack food, dessert, and beer. It felt good to eat super clean the last few days. Can’t wait to see what you put in the superfood pudding it looks delicious!

      October 20, 2017 at 9:25 PM

Oy! I have to learn that lesson over and over. I hope it was at least fun though!

Mmm the butternut squash sounds super amazing. All the meals with fall produce look delicious. I usually drink water right when I wake up and then tea with breakfast. It has been really cold in the morning, so the tea functions as a source of hydration and warmth. I love warming up hands with a hot mug.

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:30 PM

Thank you! Tea sounds really good right now. It finally cooled off for a couple of days!

I do find that very annoying, but also satisfying once I actually accomplish what I was trying to do. I have been so busy this is the second wiaw in a row I have not got my act together to link a post. Those roasted veggies look incredible! have a great rest of the week

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:32 PM

Very true. I’m feeling pretty proud of myself right about now.

      Get your act together! 😉

Congrats on the progress! I’d love to see a post that’s more detailed on what you personally consider clean eating, since it really is so individual 🙂

      October 20, 2017 at 9:35 PM

Thanks! I actually offered a preview to my email list… but I’m thinking of doing a challenge in January. 21 day, totally clean – no processed foods, no inflammatories, just fresh food!

F U clean eating. You’re like MOM… Always right, even if we don’t want to admit it – hahahaha! Thankfully for me, I LOVE “mom” so much, so it’s easy to conform to “her” ways! LOL!

      October 20, 2017 at 9:36 PM

Whatever. You’re always clean. Except for your slutty salmon. HAHAHA!

I washed my hands before eating cornbread and 2 baskets of chips, does that count? Actually, that is a lie, I didn’t even do that. I always feel better when I am eating better, but right now, I’m with you on the doubl einsult to injury making me want to be less than good.

Clean eating totally pays off I wish I could say I ate clean every day, I actually do eat super clean until I don’t lol, but my unclean eating only lasts for a day or two, then I’m right back on track. Consistency is totally the key. I need this superfood pudding in my life right now!

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:43 PM

HA! I eat super clean until I don’t too. Except these 21 days. Only 2 cheats! It’s almost easier when you have a start and end goal. Not that I want to start eating crap after. You know what I mean.

      P.S. Pudding is posted today!

I love butternut squash soup this time of the year. Panera has a really good one with toasted pumpkin seed in it. Surely not as clean and healthy as your version but it is very tasty!

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:44 PM

I haven’t had Panera’s! I love their tomato soup with a grilled cheese though.

Haha vodka… Although I genuinely could start every day with a mimosa… Alas it’s actually a cup of hot lemon water and local honey. Maybe one day when I achieve my dream of becoming Karen Walker…

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:45 PM

I could start each day with a glass of bubbly too! Can we make that a thing? Karen would be SO proud.

oooh look at those figs, I just bought some yesterday and am feasting today! I drink a ton in morning —-> 1 liter water, 1 absolute zero monster (I know), and a coffee, then more water. Then I go to the gym and have to take 10 pee breaks!

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:47 PM

      They’re the perfect pre-workout!

A LITER of water?! I’d be floating. Good for you! Gotta wash down that Monster. 😉

    October 19, 2017 at 11:02 AM

Wow – congrats on your progress. You are inspiring me! How do you manage to keep up your momentum on weekends/if you want a drink?? That’s where I fall short, ugh!

The first thing I drink in the morning is water during my morning workout. Then it’s coffee with almond milk time 🙂

    • Laura says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:51 PM

Thank you! The first weekend I just stayed in. The second weekend, I had a cheat night on Saturday. This weekend… I haven’t planned yet, but I think we’re just going to a movie tomorrow. One thing that’s helped me is committing to 21 days clean. Having a start and end give me a goal line. Then, the idea is that I’ll have reset some habits and formed new ones. Tomorrow is day 21!

Funny what consistency does! I tell my clients this all the time. Some of them believe me, some not so much. Sharing this!

    • Laura says

Thanks for sharing! If you can just commit for a couple of weeks – long enough to see some results – the physical changes become a HUGE motivator.
