The Wrong Equipment

October 8, 2018 By Laura

What did you want to be when you grew up? At 8 years old, I wanted to play for the Atlanta Braves.  When I told my dad about my career goal, he laughed and said, “you have the wrong equipment.”

There are a lot of reasons why I would never make it to the majors.  I’m not particularly gifted athletically being reason #1.  My dad chose to call out my gender.  This is especially odd because he had 3 daughters.  I was never told I couldn’t do something academically.  In fact, he often pushed me harder than I wanted to be pushed to do well in school (thankfully).  But, there were some things I just wasn’t able to do because I was a girl.

Being a girl shouldn’t be disqualifying.  One day, there will be a little girl that grows up and makes it to the professional baseball mainstage.  There have already been a few to come close.

Actually, in 1922 there was one – Lizzy Murphy.  She played first base for 17 years.  Lizzy’s career batting average is .300.  (That’s a great average. For comparison, Chipper Jones’ career average is .303.)

My dad wasn’t a bad man.  He was a great man.  He was also a product of society.  I would love to hear a story about a time when a man was told he couldn’t do something because he had “the wrong equipment.”

Athletic ability aside, women also cannot “get away” with the behavior that men can.  If Hillary Clinton, for example, had broken down as Brett Kavanaugh did during her hearings… can you imagine what people would have said?  I can.  Women are too emotional for public office.  She’s an angry woman.  She’s shrill.  She doesn’t have the stamina, the poise… the list could go on and on.

Or what about her appearance?  I saw a comment on a Facebook post about Justice Ginsberg the other day where someone commented: “she’s so ugly.”  The commenter WAS A WOMAN!!!  Do you think anyone has ever discussed how Kavanaugh’s expression looks like he just had Trump’s mushroom dick in his mouth?  NO.

That’s because the appearance of men isn’t a qualifier.  Their demeanor doesn’t matter.  Their past behavior isn’t a consideration.  Which would be fine… if the same rules applied to everyone.  (And if he hadn’t perjured himself, but that’s another post.)

Before you protest, think about the comments you’ve made about men and women in your life.  Where a woman is a slut, a man is a pimp.  A woman is a bitch; a man is aggressive.  A woman is loud; a man is proud.  A woman is pushy; a man is a “go-getter.”  I could go on for days.

The unequal playing field is SO pronounced that Trump actually declared it’s “a scary time for young men in America.”

Riiiiiight.

Rather than go on about how ridiculous that is, I’d encourage you to listen to this song by Lynzy Lab Stewart titled “A Scary Time.”

To the men who really think this is a “scary time” – fuck off.  Seriously.  Walk down the street tomorrow and appreciate the fact that you do so without having to look over your shoulder.  Have a drink at a bar without taking extra care not to leave it unattended.  Look at the vast majority of people in leadership positions in this world, and appreciate that they have the right “equipment” … just like you.

The next time you think a woman doesn’t have a right to be wherever you are, consider your reasoning.  Does she lack the skill, or does she just lack the “equipment” for the role?

Before I get hater-ade dumped all over me, let me be clear.  I like men.  Some of my favorite people possess eggplant-esque equipment.  Don’t call me a man-hating lesbian.  I’m a patriarchy-hating lesbian.  Get it right.

It’s Common Sense

October 4, 2017 By Laura

After the tragedy in Las Vegas, I’ve found it hard to express the sadness I feel for the country.  It’s difficult to fathom why we haven’t passed better gun legislation, given all of the mass killings the US has suffered in the last 10 years alone.  It’s common sense.

It's not about gun legislation. It's about common sense.

Jimmy Kimmel said it so well in his monologue.  It isn’t about gun legislation.  IT’S COMMON SENSE.

No one is coming for my uncle’s hunting rifle or the hand gun my wife keeps by the bed.  That’s not the problem.  The problem – aside from the incredible disrespect people have for human life –  is that we’ve made it the norm, even encouraged, for gun enthusiasts to buy assault rifles and modifiers that allow those rifles to mimic machine guns.

I’m SO SICK of hearing people defend guns.  Was it the individual’s fault?  Absolutely.  Is it okay for any civilian to own 49 weapons?!  NO.  How about thousands of rounds of ammunition and 12 rifles rigged for rapid fire.  FUCK NO.

It’s the immediate fault of the terrorist, but we – as a society – make it relatively easy for these fuckers to get their hands on guns with the capacity to kill 59 and injure 500+ in just 11 minutes.  That’s not a handgun for protection or a rifle for deer hunting.

So let’s act.  Take some time today to write your Representatives and Senators to demand COMMON SENSE gun legislation.  Here’s a few common sense ideas:

  • Require universal background checks.  Did you know you can order a gun online or purchase one at a show without a background check?
  • Impose a limit on the amount of guns and ammunition one can purchase in a certain time period.  No one needs 49 rifles and thousands of round of ammo for deer season.
  • Restrict the mentally ill and those convicted of abuse from buying guns.  If you’re beating your wife or have schizophrenia… probably don’t need a gun.
  • Raise the age to buy a gun to 21.  I don’t know about you, but at 18 I could’ve done a lot less damage with a beer than I could have with a gun.
  • Ban assault rifles and bump-fire stock.  You’re not in combat in Afghanistan.  You don’t need that shit.
  • Make it harder to get a gun than an abortion.  Seriously ya’ll.  I thought these mo fos were pro life?!

These are basic, common sense protections I hope all reasonable people can all agree on.  It won’t be a magic cure, but it’s a start.  It’s better than nothing, which is what we’ve done in the past.

I don’t really feel like doing this today, but let’s pretend the world hasn’t lost its mind and have a normal-ish #WIAW party.  Check out my day of eats below, and be sure to link up to Jenn’s WIAW baby at the bottom.

WIAW - New

Breakfast:

As per usual, Vegas brought me coffee to bed.  After checking some email, I come downstairs to make our morning cocktails.

Breakfast was an old favorite: Sweet Potato Chia Pudding.  It legit tastes like pie filling.

Sweet Potato Pie Chia Pudding. it's vegan, gluten-free, and legit tastes like pie filling!

Here’s how you do it:

  • 1/4 large sweet potato, baked
  • 1 T chia seeds
  • 1 scoop vanilla pea protein powder
  • 1/2 C unsweetened coconut milk (or other liquid)
  • 2 tsp tahini
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 2-3 drops vanilla stevia
  • Shake of salt
  • Pinch cloves

In a bowl, mash up the sweet potato until it’s smooth-ish. Mix in the other ingredients and refrigerate at least 1 hour (or overnight). If it’s too thick, add more milk or water as needed.

FYI: This also works well with pumpkin.

Lunch:

I spent the morning cooking, so I used what I was making: eggplant “bacon” and zucchini hummus.  (Recipes to come later.)  Plus a bunch of veggies and La Croix.

Snack:

A quickie before the gym: fresh fig with tahini.  I’m on a tahini bender.

I posted the workout and a sweet booty move on Instagram.  (Sweet because it ends in a kissy face.)

Dinner:

Before dinner I had a smoothie bowl, but that was less interesting.  Dinner was a homemade veggie burger and a GIANT salad.  It was tasty.  If I can motivate to take pics, that recipe may get posted soon-ish!

Let’s also not forget about Puerto Rico.  There are now 34 dead and 95% of the island is still without power.

Did you notice anything weird (for me) about my day of eats?

Have you ever been to Vegas?  We stayed right next to the concert venue at the Tropicana a couple weeks ago.

Semi-Normal Eats + WIAW

November 7, 2012 By Laura

Freedom.

It makes me happy.

After a week of boring, #stinkypee eats, lean white protein and asparagus are NOT What I Ate Wednesday.

My post-competition trip to Whole Paycheck Foods was the stuff of dreams.  I had a list and nothing but time.

2 hours later I emerged from Whole Foods almost $200 poorer and without a single piece of meat in my cart.  I even skipped the bacon (the line at the meat counter was too long).

Of course I had to fuel up properly before making this epic grocery trip.  Toad in the Hole made with P28 High Protein Bread and a local farm egg.  Cooked in truffle oil and topped with sriracha.  Welcome back, #yolkporn.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

I’m so happy to get to post a semi-normal What I Ate Wednesday!  I say semi-normal because It has been a busy day and I didn’t get to be quite a funk with my foods… and I went to an election night gathering… so I had a bug ‘ol treat dinner.  Woot!

Also different is how my meals are labeled.  No “Meal 1, Meal 2,” etc. this week!  I ate a proper Breakfast-Lunch-Snack-Dinner.  I’ll have another meal plan soon, but these are my days “off” before we start training again.  I hate to admit it… but I kind of missed eating more meals!

Check out my semi-good habit eats below, and then click here to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons to get to see how everyone else ate on Election Day.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Breakfast:

Somethings will never change.  I started out with my morning cocktail (mix of Apple Cider Vinegar, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos).

This was followed by my TVP “Oatmeal” done up apple pie-style.  I add apple pie spice and mixed in fresh apple at the end.  Topped with a peanut butter drizzle and cinnamon.

Lunch:

I brought my leftover’s from last night’s dinner to work.  Roasted brussels, cauliflouwer, and baby bellas.  I tossed then in salty fish sauce, red peppe flakes, and coconut oil pre-roasting.

The noodles are kelp noodles.  I heated them in hot water to soften and toss in a pad thai-ish sauce.  I’m enjoying my freedom from measurement, but here are the ingredients for the sauce:

  • Peanut flour
  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • Grated ginger
  • Lime juice
  • Cayenne
  • 1 drop lemon Stevia

Still trying to get my protein in (and because I wanted them), I had a bag of Veggie Pizza Protein Puffs from Kay’s Naturals.  I ordered online; click here to find them and get 20% off your order.

Snack:

Pumpkin hummus, cauliflower, and edamame.

Eating carbs mid afternoon still feels so scandalous!

Dinner:

I spent the evening with my friends Todd and Jeff watching the election results like some people watch football games.  If people watch football with Malbec and cookbooks…

Election Day = pizza night!  Mellow Mushroom pizza (side note: I worked there in college for a hot minute) with meatballs, red peppers, and feta cheese with a side salad.

Look at this plate and that glass of wine above.  Then multiply it by 2.  It was a 2x dinner.

Dessert:

A celebration bowl of pumpkin ice cream (real ice cream – full fat and yummy) topped with a crumbled cinnamon muffin and chocolate syrup.

***

The protein count for the day: KIDDING!!!  I have NO idea.  Freedom from numbers.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent on groceries?

Did you do any election night partying?
