Starbucks Record & Illegal Birthday Eats

July 16, 2014 By Laura

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like free.

Or cold, hard cash.  Either way.

By now we are all aware of the free Starbucks drink on your birthday.  Even though I didn’t get an offer this year – wtf?!  People like to make a game of how much they can get – whether its a birthday freebie or just to pay too much for already over-priced coffee.  The previous record for ONE drink was $54.74.  Child’s play!

starbucks epic order

A Florida woman managed to order a $60.58 Frappuccino.  According to Consumerist, the drink consisted of 60 shots of espresso, matcha powder (gotta stay healthy!), and caramel, white mocha, and hazelnut syrups. She even brought along a jug for the barista so it would all fit!  I’m assuming she didn’t drink it all… I didn’t see any follow up reports about her having a caffeine-induced heart attack.

Yet another way to order obnoxiously at Starbucks.  You’re welcome.

This WIAW is a birth-day east celebration!  Actually, it was pretty mundane until dinner… I was busy at work and I knew what was coming to me for dinner!

Marshmallow Chocolate Chip Cake + WIAW

January 15, 2014 By Laura

It’s rare that I repeat a meal.

Except dessert.

Variety is one of the keys to staying on track.  I know this is different for everyone, but if I don’t stay entertained by what I’m eating it’s not pretty.  Which is why I’m shocked by this story about a woman eating nothing but Starbucks for a YEAR.

Beatiful-Existence-Starbucks-For-One-Year

The 40-year-old woman, Beautiful Existence, is a mother of two.  Yes, that’s her legal name.  She still cooked for her kids, but – even on holidays – only ate Starbucks food.

She said she spent $500-$600 a month on meals, and ended up saving money and losing weight.  Her first non-Starbucks meal?  Fish and chips from Seattle restaurant chain.

I would’ve done a lot better than that after  year of bagels!

This WIAW I did not eat at Starbucks.  I did repeat a meal, and for that I am ashamed.  Kidding, kidding.

Obnoxious Orders + WIAW

July 31, 2013 By Laura

Lately there seems to be a streak of obnoxious.

Or maybe I’m having a streak of impatience?

We’ve become a nation of “have it your way.”  But has it done nothing more than turn us into entitled, bourgeois consumers?  We can have virtually anything we want almost instantly.

Take Starbucks.  Yesterday I ran across this article filled with the most obnoxious Starbucks orders.  At first I thought they weren’t SO bad… but keep reading.

Starbucks

My favorites:*

  • Decaf, Soy Latte With An Extra Shot And Cream → Soy, decaf… with CREAM?  And an extra SHOT?  I’m naming this “The Oxymoron”
  • Quad Grande, Non Fat, Extra Hot Caramel Macchiato Upside Down → Upside down?  This is coffee.  Not a cake.  And why bother with the non-fat after all the damn sugar you’re drinking?!
  • Caramel Macchiato, Venti, Skim, Extra Shot, Extra-Hot, Extra-Whip, Sugar-Free → You are aware that whip isn’t sugar-free, right?
  • Grande Chai Tea Latte, 3 Pump, Skim Milk, Lite Water, No Foam, Extra Hot → If you have a pump number specification, you miiiiight be high-maintenence.  And lite water?  As opposed to full-fat?

*All of this is in good fun… I’m sure people (read: my boss) think the way I order in restaurants is obnoxious.

It is rare that I buy coffee.  It’s rare that I even drink coffee.  That said, I do dig this Mocha Protein Frapp.  I know, I know, leave it to me to prefer a protein drink…

Mocha Protein Frapp

Who needs Starbucks when you can have a homemade protein mocha frapp with a fraction of the sugar?  Make this and save yourself $6 and 20g of sugar.

This day of WIAW eats was odd… there were some semi-fails and a wave of nausea… but  let’s face it, eating is always the best part of my day.

Breakfast:

My morning cocktail (apple cider vinegar, water, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos) happened, as usual.  I swear this is the biggest addiction in my life.

Breakfast was a pancake experiment… it’s not there yet.  Will keep working.  That said, everything is better when topped with bacon and peanut butter sauce.

Pancake experiment

Mid-Morning Snack:

I don’t buy packaged proteins very often, but I do like the Trader Joe’s Balsamic Chicken.  Its full of flavor and high in protein.  Perfect for busy weeks!  I ate it with raw corn and riced cauliflower mixed with hummus.

That sounds odd after typing it out loud… hmmm…

Chicken and cauliflower rice

Lunch:

My favorite: Sea Bass.  I prepare it during my Sunday food prep.  It’s simply coated with fresh thyme, rosemary, garlic, black pepper, and lemon, then I bake it on foil in the oven for 12 mins (400 degrees on convection roast).

I ate it with a side of veggies I pre-roasted on Sunday.  To reheat them, I just place them in the oven under broil so they get nice a crispy.

Afternoon Snack:

The smoothie love continues.  After my workout this afternoon I made a strange… but strange… smoothie bowl.  I think it would have been fine if I hadn’t added so much wheatgrass. strange smoothie

In my smoothie:

  • Chocolate protein powder
  • Wheatgrass
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli slaw
  • Maple extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Fresh ginger
  • Liquid Stevia
  • Toppings: TruWhip, cacao nibs and raw oats

I had an awkwardly timed hair appointment after work, so I had a second snack to tide me over.  My favorite thing.

Kabocha squash!  I roasted it like I did in  this #strangebutgood post and topped it with a quick sauce of peanut flour, almond milk, almond extract, cinnamon, and a couple drops of stevia.  And cacao nibs (I think I’m addicted).

Dinner:

I went to get my mane tamed, and while I was in the stylist’s chair I got oddly nauseous.  It was so weird!  Suddenly I just felt like I might have to run to the bathroom.  I drank water, breathed calmly, and made it through the cut.

After I got home I wasn’t hungry, but I knew it was time to eat.  Cheese toast sounded good, so I made that with some Ezekial bread and sample packet of Dubliner cheese I found in the fridge (hope that wasn’t too old…).  Then I added a bunch of stuff.  Swordfish (just a bit for protein – seafood isn’t appealing when feeling puke-y), sugar peas, hummus, and roasted tomatoes with basil.

odd dinner

Dessert:

I still felt a little off, so I went with Greek yogurt hoping the good bacteria would work some magic.  A bit ‘o #strangebutgood always makes me feel better. 🙂

Popcorn is an awesome dessert topper.  I buy mine in the bulk bins and pop it in brown paper bags in the microwave.  This was topped with melted cherries.  The underbelly of this deliciousness was Greek yogurt mixed with 1/2 scoop of protein powder, carob powder, cinnamon, a little cayenne, and a few drops of Stevia.

After leg day on Monday, I am so sore today that just the thought of walking hurts.  Can that cause nausea??? 😉

What is the most obnoxious thing you order?  Mine is salad.  Basically I want to build my own.  I don’t want the cheese if it’s the crappy shredded stuff, I do want to add red pepper flakes, the dressing must be on the side, and – for the love of god – don’t salt anything.  Is that so hard?!

What do you eat when your stomach doesn’t feel right?

No Beans About It: Butternut Thyme Hummus

February 17, 2012 By Laura

Trivia question.

Winner gets a $25 bar tab.  Kidding…

What is the most expensive drink at Starbucks?  A $9 Grande Latte with a few fancy add-ins?  $15 with some extra espresso shots?

According to this article from Eater, the most expensive drink you can order is $23.60!  Lucky for him, the customer had a free drink coupon.

Source: eater.com

This monstrosity was a Trenta (I didn’t even know that was a size) Java Chip Frappuccino with 16 shots of espresso, a shot of soy milk, caramel flavoring, banana puree, strawberry puree, vanilla beans, Matcha powder, protein powder, and a drizzle of caramel and mocha.

It reportedly didn’t even taste good.

One of the hardest parts of being on this cleanse is not having hummus.  Like any good blogger, hummus is a staple food for me.  It has its own level on my personal food pyramid.

Remember this pic from Wednesday?

As I was roasting squash this weekend, I remembered a hummus I made last summer using butternut squash rather than chickpeas.

This is a new version of that, with thyme being the herb addition rather than rosemary.  I don’t know which I like better!

My butternut was one of the sweetest I’ve ever had.  Some of that is probably the squash itself, but I also roasted it longer than I usually do.  Truth: I kind of forgot it was in the oven.

The longer bake time resulted in a sweet glaze on the squash.  When I lifted it off to the foil I baked it on, I noticed a caramel had formed on the bottom where the juices spilled over.  I promptly ate that up.

Squash caramel aside, you should try this hummus.  It’s wonderful with veggies and crackers.  Thin it out with some apple cider vinegar and water for a salad dressing.  Spread it on a sandwich.

Serve it as an appetizer with crudités and a yeasty sparkling wine (*drool*).

You really can’t go wrong.

Butternut Thyme Hummus

Butternut Thyme Hummus

  • 2 C butternut squash, roasted
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 T fresh thyme
  • 1 T tahini
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • S+P, to taste

Place all ingredients in food processor and blend until smooth.

Adjust spices, salt, and pepper to your preference.

Makes 1.5 cups.

Tonight is another cleanse dinner.  We lost one cleanse buddy, but my BFF and I are still going strong!  I’m making root veggie fries to go with her homemade tomato soup… it’s our version of french fries and ketchup.

What are you doing this weekend?  Any fun adventures planned?

What is your favorite hummus flavor?

Four Eyes and 6 Wines

July 23, 2011 By Laura

How much can you fit into one day?

Apparently I decided to try and find out yesterday.

I ran a new route and even with the (somewhat unexpected) hills and kept a good pace.  My legs felt really stong after a Thursday rest day.

Stats:

  • Distance – 6 miles
  • Time – 48:06 mins
  • Pace – 8:01

My legs did feel a bit heavy at mile 5, but that didn’t prevent me from sprinting to make a cross walk and then running up and down my street to get the last quarter mile (had to make an even 6!).

Recovery smoothie time.  Thursday’s smoothie list reminded me of a old favorite – mocha banana.  It was just as delicious as I remembered.

Mocha = Smoothie in a Mug

I worked from home in the morning, but took a moment to make a crust (to be filled in a few mins this morning).

Any guesses as to what it’s getting filled with?

I also took a moment to learn a very import lesson about why you should wear a shirt while baking.

Due to an eye appointment, I took a lunch break from Excel.

I’m loving my new doc, Dr. Reena Gupta, at Ansley Eye Care!  She fixed me up with an updated prescription and new glasses to replace my old (5+ years?!) pair.  She get extra rockstar points for being at work just 1 month after having a baby!

Which is better?  1?  2?  Or 3?

They arrive next week!

Starbucks has become my home-away-from-home during this crazy work period.

I tried one of their new lunch boxes – the Chipotle Chicken Wraps.

Verdict: Not bad.  It was <400 calories and had 26g of protein.  The sauce was delish and I loved that it came with a piece of dark chocolate.  The tortilla could have been more fresh, but for a boxed lunch it was fine.

After chowing down, I found a new ring in the fiery pits of Excel hell  more working from Starbucks ensued.

No matter – because then I got to celebrate the weekend with an Italian wine tasting!  Perrine does a great job with these at her shop – complete with an awesome cheese spread.

She even brings in the wine makers.  There is nothing cooler than talking to the Italian wine maker while sipping on his wine…

…except when you get that Italian grower to autograph your newly-acquired bottle of his signature wine.

Corinne and I will be visiting Alessandro Bocci and enjoying the wines at Perazzeta in Italia. 🙂

The icing on this day’s cake was sharing one of those bottles over (another) delicious dinner at Bocado.

That beet salad with farro, avocado, hazelnuts, and oranges is seriously addicting.  If you’re in ATL, don’t miss it!

And that, my friends, is how you fill up a Friday.

***

You guys were cracking me up about the peanuts and coke yesterday.  I kind of want to try it…

What are you doing this weekend?

Is anyone running a race?  I’m missing it after a couple weeks off!
