Highway 1 Road Trip: Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz

July 29, 2016 By Laura

I will eventually recap my entire birthday trip.

It just might take until my next birthday.

I posted our Golden Gate bridge urban hike, but after that we packed up and headed south down Highway 1, the scenic route down the coast of California.  It’s a beautiful trip – if you ever have a chance to make the drive, DO IT!

Golden Gate Bridge: A Birthday Urban Hike

July 15, 2016 By Laura

Birthdays are the best.

Especially with Vegas.

I’d have to start by saying that it a scary time to be celebratory.  I’m so sad for the world, and most recently for Nice.  My sister is traveling there right now; I am so very grateful she’s ok.

Secondly, I’m grateful to be in San Fransisco for my birthday with Vegas.  I don’t have many words, so I’ll leave you with some pictures from our hike across to Golden Gate Bridge.

Birthday Surprises + Cheesecake Dessert Giveaway

July 20, 2015 By Laura

I should probably stop celebrating my birthday now.

But at 32 I’m just not that mature yet.

Vegas had an amazing surprise planned for me on my birthday… but she didn’t wait until the day of to treat me!  And – because I don’t think you should stop being treated either – I have a delicious (healthy-ish!) cheesecake dessert giveaway for you at the end of this post.

So.  To begin the birthday celebration we first went to a fabulous dinner on my birthday-eve.  The Patio on Goldfinch  has been on my list to try for a long time.  Vegas picked me up in my freshly washed car (another treat!) and we had a lovely evening out.  How fabulous does this look?!

Dressing Up and Playing Ball [$25 Dick’s Giveaway]

July 15, 2015 By Laura

It’s my birthday!!!

Obviously that means presents.

The weekend before my birthday was San Diego’s infamous Over the Line tournament (OTL).  Basically, it’s 2 days of camping and playing a baseball-ish game in the sunshine and sand at the beach.

There are 3 players on each team.  Your own team member tosses a ball up for you to hit with a wooden bat.  You have to hit the ball in the fair territory to get a hit.  There are no runners, but 3 hits scores a run.

Rainbow Layer Cake [Recipe]

July 13, 2015 By Laura

It’s my birthday week!!!

So I made myself a cake.

Actually, I made this cake on the 4th of July… but I consider the whole month my birthday.  Therefore, this was a marriage equality-4th of July-birthday cake.

Regardless of the occasion, there’s no better show-stopper than cutting into this Rainbow Layer Cake at a party and revealing the vivid layers of color.

Rainbow Layer Cake - it takes some time to make, but I promise the end product is well worth it. Plus I have a few tricks to make it easier!

Starbucks Record & Illegal Birthday Eats

July 16, 2014 By Laura

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like free.

Or cold, hard cash.  Either way.

By now we are all aware of the free Starbucks drink on your birthday.  Even though I didn’t get an offer this year – wtf?!  People like to make a game of how much they can get – whether its a birthday freebie or just to pay too much for already over-priced coffee.  The previous record for ONE drink was $54.74.  Child’s play!

starbucks epic order

A Florida woman managed to order a $60.58 Frappuccino.  According to Consumerist, the drink consisted of 60 shots of espresso, matcha powder (gotta stay healthy!), and caramel, white mocha, and hazelnut syrups. She even brought along a jug for the barista so it would all fit!  I’m assuming she didn’t drink it all… I didn’t see any follow up reports about her having a caffeine-induced heart attack.

Yet another way to order obnoxiously at Starbucks.  You’re welcome.

Travel Hangover + a Swiss Birthday

May 19, 2014 By Laura

The hangover is one downside to travel.

Besides the bathrooms on trains.

Coming home is my least favorite part about any vacation.  The harsh reality of a travel hangover: waking up without a mountain view, fighting jet lag, and realizing you can no longer subside on bread, cheese, chocolate, and wine.  Or can I…?

With a sad heart I left Lucie in Zurich on Saturday morning.  I had one last espresso (with the little chocolates they always serve them with) and bought a pretzel for the plane ride.  I became addicted to “bretzels” on this trip.

Even the creamer is prettier in Switzerland

Never Was a Cornflake Girl

July 15, 2013 By Laura

I never was a cornflake girl…

Except for that time in MBA school when I was voted prom king...

Except for that time in MBA school when I was voted prom king…

Please, someone get the Tori Amos reference.

On my 30th birthday, I was going to rebel and not post the typical “things I’ve learned.”  But I guess I can be a bit of a joiner… here are 5 important lessons I’ve learned at the sage old age of 30:

1. Being Strange is GOOD

I wasn’t kidding – I wasn’t a cornflake girl.  I never really fit in.  That used to bother me, but – especially over the past 10 years – I’ve learned to embrace it.  Being part of the crowd is boring.  Love the things that make you unique!

This lesson was really driven home when I played roller derby.  The ladies on my team and in my league 100% embrace what makes them who they are.  They own it unapologetically, and I’m forever grateful for the experience (broken jaw and all).

2. Learn to Say NO

It’s can be a good thing to be a little selfish with your time.  I find that I tend to commit to too many things, leaving little “down” time for myself.  While it’s fun and I love being active, I also need time to chill.

This is something I continue to struggle with (and have failed at over the past couple of weeks), but I continue to learn the lesson and I know that in the long run not saying yes is better for everyone (grumpy, over-extended Laura is no fun to be around).

3. Be Sensitive to Others

This is a recent focus for me.  I used to associate being sensitive with weakness.  I was proudly selfish with more than my time.  While I still think being selfish to some degree is a good thing (see #2), you can go too far to the extreme.

Unfortunately the reason I’ve been more aware lately is because there are a few people in my life who I felt hurt by.  I always saw them as considerate, caring people, but I’ve recently struggled with some things and they sort of disappeared.  It hurt my feelings, but it was a lesson I needed.  It showed me that I was guilty of the same, and I’ve been working to modify that.

No more starting fires for me

4. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

This is something my dad constantly told me growing up.  All of us do stupid things.  We make mistakes.  We’re goofy and imperfect.  Laughing at yourself will save your sanity.

My sisters and I are polar opposites.  We tap dance on each other’s last nerve.  Like many of you, we’ve dealt with illness, loss, and fear.  We get through it all and forgive.  Someone farts in the middle of a heated debate and the room inevitably fills with laughter.  And a foul smell.

5. Love Your Mother

She is the one person who will love you unconditionally and will do anything for you.  She’ll drive across town at 2am when you have the stomach flu.  She will forgive you even when you act like a complete asshole (not that I ever do that…).  She will bathe you when you can’t lift your arms.  She will understand that sometimes you just need a hug.  She will go out of her way to make sure you celebrate turning 30 even when she feels like crap.

My mom rocks.

I had way too much fun going through old pics for this post.  So many fun memories!

What are some of the most life valuable lessons you have learned?

If you could go back 10 (or more) years and tell your self something, what would it be?  I’d tell my 20-year-old self not to be in such a rush to grow up!
