The Strange But Good Truth About Uni

July 3, 2015 By Laura

Some people might not agree with me on this one.

A couple of them are in my family.

Uni is delicious.  Uni refers to the edible part of a sea urchin.  I’d had it before in sushi dishes, but this week while my family was here I split a whole one with my mom at Ironside.

It’s spikes were still moving a little…

Madi and Mom with uni

My sister was creeped.

We were debating what uni actually was.  I thought it was just roe.  A quick google search told us otherwise.  Uni is actually a sea urchin’s gonads.

That was almost too strange to be good.  But I’d already eaten it and liked it.  Vegas was disgusted.

Uni

The more golden the uni, the better it is.  It’s creamy and silky, which is odd at first.  If it’s your first time trying it I recommend having it as sushi to offset the texture.

It’s a high demand delicacy throughout the world (read: it’s expensive).  It really is worth the price tag.  It’s so good!  A bit briny, but more on the sweet side.  It’s surprisingly light!

Another interesting fact about uni: it’s an aphrodisiac.

I don’t know why but I have never warmed to eating fish/ seafood… basically anything that comes from the sea.
I am disgusted and intrigued at the same time! I don’t know if I was brave enough to try it. I guess it depends on if I had a drink before. After one glass I am much braver to taste stuff that I would never consider to try sober.

I’ve always been curious to know if I would like Uni. I don’t care for overly rich things, but uni isn’t necessarily greasy/oil, just unctuous. I really must try it some time!

    • Laura says

      July 16, 2015 at 4:17 PM

You’d love it! It’s not terribly rich, but a bit briny.

I was just at sushi and my friend said: I hate uni. It tastes like whale jizz.

Makes me wonder when she’s had whale jizz before… And why I wasn’t invited to that PARTY…..

    • Laura says

      July 16, 2015 at 4:27 PM

I’ll eat nearly anything once, but I draw the line at whale jizz.

    July 9, 2015 at 6:19 PM

I thought it was the uni’s guts – interesting to see it’s not quite that. 🙂 We saw a lot of these in the ocean last week! I like it best topped with a raw quail egg.

I love uni! I didn’t think I liked it until I had it at the Tsukiji market in Japan where it was obviously very fresh. It was so smooth, it was like butter. I was never able to recreate that once I returned to North America… and then I became vegan. 😛 Your piece is huge though! I did not know it was the sea urchin’s gonads. Interesting.

    • Laura says

      July 16, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Ok, this surprises me! But awesome. I’d love to try it in Japan.

oh man, i am still an uni virgin (at least, as far as i can remember!). i do want to try it but sorta wish i didn’t know what you just revealed about it! then again, i’ve had pig’s feet in a vietnamese dish and it’s delicious. even had blood sausage once and it was actually kind of decent… we’re hopefully going to ironside this weekend so i’ll ask the family if they wanna try it… =D

    • Laura says

      July 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Oh man… if you can eat pig’s feet you can totally eat uni! I tried the blood sausage once too. Wasn’t my favorite… but I think that was mostly mental. 🙂

Enjoy Ironside! Our favorites were the lobster roll and the oysters.
