Marvelous Memorable Meals in Napa

July 22, 2013 By Laura

Food is a significant part of any trip for me.

Sometimes it’s the whole reason for the trip…

This past week’s trip to California was no exception.  There was plenty of wine in wine-country, but the food was equally important.

After a looooong day of travel, all Lisa and I could think of when we hit the valley was wine food.  We’d already scoped out our dinner destination: Farmstead.  Farmstead is a farm (named Long Meadow Ranch) and a restaurant.  They have their own vineyards, gardens, and chicken.  Quite literally, it is a farm-to-table restaurant.

Our sights were set on a runny farm-fresh egg atop a steak tartar with capers, cornichons, tabasco, and toast.  It was fantastic.  The meat was also directly from the farm – the freshness of it made all the difference in the world.  It’s amazing neither of us licked the plate.

Farmstead steak tartare

We split a couple of other dishes as well.

The first was a grilled peach salad with speck (a cured meat similar to prosciutto), arugula, and house made ricotta.  It was good… but the peach to salty stuff was a bit off (the peaches were in too big of pieces).  That purple basil made the dish.  Wil be remebering that in the future!

Farmstead grilled peaches

The second was a grilled artichoke with gribiche (like an aioli) and lemon.  Simple and yet so good.  This preparation always makes me wish I had a grill!

Grilled artichokes
As fabulous as all of that was, the crowning jewel was dessert.  My first birthday cake of the trip was a Scharffenberger chocolate cream pie with graham cracker crust.  It was so fantastically fresh and delicious!

The crust actually tasted like it may have had some coconut, but we were assured it was just a good, old-fashioned homemade graham crust.  We talked about it lovingly for the rest of the trip.

Farmstead birthday

The other food we went on a mission for was a burger from Goose & Gander.  From the moment we walked in I knew we couldn’t have made a better choice.  The outdoor seating area alone was worth the trip.  There were lights strung across the courtyard, quaint iron tables, and tall fence “walls” covered with vines and gorgeous colorful flowers.

First thing’s first though.  A craft cocktail.  Apparently the mixologist is something of a cocktail rockstar, so we were excited to try some creative concoctions.  I went with the “Scarlet Gander.”   It was Hanger One Buddha’s Hand Citron Vodka, ginger, shiso, galangal, lemon, and rhubarb.  Not like anything  I would typically order, but the flavors were so unique I couldn’t pass it up.  It did not disappoint – these flavors were strange but good. 😉

Scarlet Gander

We begin the meal with a salad.  Our waiter recommended we try the watermelon and Rock Shrimp salad.  The melons they used were the traditional pink AND a yellow melon.  It made for a gorgeous plating!

It was served roasted peanuts and a Thai chili dressing that he swore would be a 9 on the heat scale.  It wasn’t even close to a 9, but the salad was still delicious.

Goose & Gander melon and shrimp salad

Now for the reason we came: the burger.  Multiple people told us that the burger here was the best burger around, and that it shouldn’t be missed.  It isn’t the #1 burger I’ve ever eaten, but it’s certainly top 3.  I was really glad we decided to split it… it was massive and that much indulgence would be a stomach ache waiting to happen.

The bun (from Model Bakery) was perfection  It kind of looks soggy in the pic, but it really wasn’t.  It held up to the fantastically juicy grass-fed beef burger, which was topped with bone marrow (meat butter), Gruyere cheese, house smoked bacon, and pickles.  Served with a side of duck fat fries (duck fat = crispier fries).

Goose and Gander burger

Between the craft cocktails, “famous” burger, and duck fat fries, Goose & Gander reminded me a lot of Atlanta’s Holeman & Finch (highly recommended if you are ever here).

We ate a lot more than this, but memories of these meals in particular (and the amazing company) are making my Monday Marvelous.

Moral of the story: always ask the locals what they eat.  You’ll find the coolest places and the must-try dishes.

Have you ever been to the Napa area?

Are you adamant about researching the must-try restaurants when you travel?

Hotel Food + WIAW

June 12, 2013 By Laura

This community blows me away.

That tickles my ta-tas.

All joking aside, I am so, so appreciative of everyone who stopped by and left supportive comments about yesterday’s announcement.  I was fully expecting to get slammed by at least a few people, but I didn’t get the first negative comment!  It is a personal choice and everyone seemed to acknowledge it.

My mom was surprised I posted about it, but I’m not going to act like I magically grew boobs overnight (wouldn’t it be cool if there was a boob fairy?) and randomly decided to take a break from working out.  Keeping it real, y’all.

Honesty

On top of all that, no one asked awkward questions!  I guess you guys are more polite than I am.  😀

What I did love were comment from those of you who’ve had it done.  I am really nervous about the recovery and you made me feel a LOT better.

This day of WIAW is actually a day and a half-ish.  I was traveling for work, and due to storms on the East coast I ended up spending 8.5 hours in the Atlanta airport.  Preparation saved me.

WIAWbutton

Check out my travel eats below, and then click here to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons to get to see what everyone else is enjoying!

_________________________________________________________________________________

Airport Snack 1:

I knew I’d need to eat one meal in the airport, so I’d come prepared with a crab salad.  This was just crab, red bell pepper, raw zucchini, nutritional yeast, cumin, cayenne, turmeric, and black pepper.

The best part is the utensil I found at a fast food place to eat it with: a spork!!!

Crab salad with a spork

Airport Dinner:

Having to eat this meal in the airport was a surprise.  Delta delayed my flight over and over before they finally cancelled it.  In total, I spent 8.5 hours in the Atlanta airport.  I (finally) made it out, but on another airline.

I always travel with emergency tuna packets and random spices in my bag.  The little Ms. Dash was obtained from a cafeteria on a previous work trip.  The salad was purchased from Quizno’s in the airport.

Tuna in the airport

Hotel Surprise:

That night when I (finally) arrived in the hotel I had a surprise waiting for me:

Hotel Zaza ric krispy treat

Hotel Zasa‘s turn-down service includes a rice krispy treat!!!  It was delish, but I managed to stop at half and eat an apple taken from their gym.

Pro Tip: Hotel gyms almost always have a fruit bowl.  Perfect place to grab a free snack.

Pre-Workout:

Normally I eat before liftingin the morning, but I’d gotten in and had my snack so late I wasn’t starving.  I DID have my morning cocktail (apple cider vinegar, water, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos).  It turns out that you can get through security with a small container of apple cider vinegar.

Totally patted myself on the back for this one.

Morning apple cider cocktail

Despite the late night I was motivated to go after seeing it the night before.  There were chandeliers in the workout room!!!  I’m also motivated by the fast that today is my last workout before surgery.  I’m trying to enjoy it while I can!

Side note: The women in the background was with my client.  We hadn’t met in person before, so I didn’t realize it until the meeting started a few hours later.

Hotel Zaza gym

Breakfast:

Our meeting began early in the morning, so breakfast was supplied in part by the hotel.  I got berries, eggs with some onions and red pepper, and a strip of bacon.  The eggs weren’t good (hotel eggs never are), so I mainly ate bacon and fruit.  And my own little #strangebutgood creation: chocolate protein powder mixed with coffee.  Mocha protein pudding!fruit and mocha protein pudding

Mid-Morning Snack:

We had a working snack time.  The hotel brough in mixed nuts and fruit.  These nut mixes are salty and have those totally unhealthy little crackers in them.  I enjoyed every bite.

Hotel snacks

I stole the mint garnish for the pic. #sorryimnotsorry

Lunch:

More hotel meeting food.  I took the meat out of some dried out tortillas and ate it with the pico and guac.  Only ate a few bits of the dry rice.  Have I mentioned I dislike meeting-food?

Hotel lunch

Afternoon Snacks:

I would normally have eaten the tuna here, but Friday’s delay threw me off.  I did have this mini Recharge bar leftover from Blend schwag bags.  It was pretty good!

There were also the obligatory pretzels on the (delayed) fight while I worked away.  I got over the Biscoff addiction, but can never say no to pretzels.

Recharge protein bar

Delta pretzels

Dinner:

I was desperation hungry by the time I finally got home.  I did have some veggies on hand, so I thawed a veggie burger and used collard greens to make a “taco.”  The stuff on top was parsnip rice mixed with diced cucumber, basil, nutritional yeast, cayenne, cumin, turmeric, and pepper.

Collard wraps

Dessert:

Since I’m having surgery on Thursday, I can’t eat after midnight Wednesday.  And my surgery isn’t until 1p!!!  Obviously, I am already worried about being hungry.  Despite a late dinner, I had a double size Carrot Cake Protein Batter… after eating a lot of unpictured Muesli Fusion (also from Blend) straight out the bag.  Bam.

It topped with with cacao nibs and peanut flour fluff (I do random peanut flour mixes – this one was with almond milk, flax, cinnamon, and chocolate stevia).

Carrot Cake Protein Batter

***

While I’m recovering I have a few guest posts lined up… I know people sometimes ignore skim those, but as I got through them I’m really hoping you will take a sec to read.  They are awesome!  I even have a guest #strangebutgood for Friday. 🙂

Have you ever used a spork?

Honesty.  Always the best policy?  I sometimes wish I had a 5 second delay on my mouth…

Georgia Running Trail Review + Pancake Fuel

May 30, 2013 By Laura

Starting out on the right foot is important.

Yet so often I forget…

Kat’s post today is all about trail running, I thought I’d share a quick pancake recipe (sorry if you saw this on Instagram already).  She talks about hiking fuel at the end of this post, but my recipe would be good for pre-hike fuel!

These cakes have a great mix of carbs and protein to start you off feeling the right amount of full!  I really loved how moist they were (yes, I used the word moist) thanks to the cottage cheese.  Leaving some larger pieces of the oats gives it a fabulous chew, especially if you use a mix of grains (mine is oats and millet).

Cottage Cheese Pancakes

Cottage Cheese Protein Pancakes

(Inspired by Morganne)

  • 1/4 c oats
  • 1/3 c egg whites
  • 1/4 c cottage cheese
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp butter extract
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • Stevia or other sweetener, to taste

Place all ingredients in a lender (I used the small Magic Bullet container) and briefly mix, allowing some larger pieces of oats to remain.  Cooked in a pan over medium heat, flipping half way through.

Top as desired.  I used raspberries, strawberries, and peanut butter syrup.  My syrup mix consisted of sugar-free syrup, peanut flour, caramel extract, and a little water.  I didn’t measure… but just guess and adjust as you go.

I’ve babbled enough!  Here’s Kat!!!

Mega Trail Heaven – Trail Reviews!

Since I last wrote, yes, Law School Graduation happened!  It was a crazy day, and yes, it’s true, family drama cannot be kept at bay.  I did have friends and family visit from all over, and it ended up being completely AWESOME.  I am especially grateful to my friends who came from out-of-state, and even from locations 8 hours away.

Grad

Badass

And afterwards, we went out on the town.  Dancing with Mom and Grammy was awesome!

After the fancy cocktail party, we went to a local club to dance the night away.  Grammy I think won us all over, and my friends dancing with Grammy was also not too shabby… the pics below are not even the highlights but I don’t want to really embarrass anyone. 😉  (Editor’s note: Yes, let’s not ruin any political careers…)

Night Crazy

And, in honor of celebrating graduation and my little break before bar review, I am having a little fun!  (Editor’s note: WELL deserved!)

First, I got a new bike!  She is a Scott Plasma tri bike, and she rides like a Porsche!   I took her out on Friday for our first ride together!  (Editor’s note: What’s her name?!)

Bike

Second, I am trail running like crazy!  I have hit over 5 different trails in the last week for some long, much needed and deserved runs.  Here is an overview of some of the trails and my personal “Trail Review.”

1. Sope Creek trails

Sope Creek is located just outside the Atlanta perimeter (285).  A short drive for local Atlanta folk, and they are GORGEOUS.  These trails are easy to navigate with maps at every turn.  There are not many hills, and most of them are also suitable for mountain biking!  There are also some cool old paper mill ruins.

(Editor’s note: I grew up RIGHT there and went to Sope Creek Elementary!)

Sope Creek

2. Yeti Trails

Saturday, I went over to the Tributary and got a good run in on the Yeti Trails, which are located near Sweetwater State Park.  (Editor’s note: I love these trails!)

These trails are pretty mild with some incline and decline, but no mountains, that’s for sure.  They’re well-shaded and provide scenic views of water crossings and the river.  You can also throw in some steeper hills at the power lines and gas lines, if you desire!  (All before I went car shopping!  You will get to see my new car next time!)

Yeti Trails

3.  Hiker Hostel

Then I headed up to the mountains and stayed at Hiker Hostel, a cute little hostel that allows dogs!  So we could bring pups up to hike AND I could run some trails.

Hiker Hostel is great because it’s family owned by a husband and wife who are super friendly, and they have their own bees for honey, and their own chickens!  Such an adorable home.  If you are ever in North Georgia, it’s a great place to stay!  They also have a fully equipped kitchen downstairs so you can make your own dinner.

They have chickens to provide eggs for your breakfast!

They also sell their coffee by the pound, and with a message!

4. Vogel State Park

This cute get-away allowed us to first go up to Vogel State Park where we hiked the Bear Hair Trail with the dogs, and I got to go for a run on the Georgia Death Race course.

The hike on Bear Hair was awesome – lots of beautiful plants, including “flaming azaelias,” a local wild flower, and plenty of water crossings.  There were enough hills to make it a difficult hike, but a fun couple of hours with the pups.

Vogel State Park

Vogel State Park

Then, I hit the Appalachian Trail… a bit easier to run here than on Bear Hair, and not QUITE as much scenery.  The trails are pretty rocky, with some water crossings.  I had never seen these trails during the day!!!  I also had a cathartic moment where I revisited the location where I sprained my ankle.

5. Woody Gap

Monday morning I went for a run at Woody Gap, a section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) between Vogel and Amicalola Falls State Park.  These trails are comparable to the AT by Vogel but has better scenic overlooks and is a bit rockier.

They are a difficult run, but worth the beauty.  I also ran into a bunch of hikers, surprised to see a runner out there!  (Editor’s note: further proof you’re a bad ass.)

6. Amicalola Falls

Then we went to Amicalola Falls on Monday afternoon for some more hiking.  While you can also get on the Appalachian Trail for running from here, we stuck to the park area, which was over-crowded due to the holiday weekend.

The park definitely had a more peaceful feel to it with all of the water (Editor’s note: the falls are gorgeous!), and the hiking was actually pretty difficult.  I was pooped after just a few short miles.  The dogs were ready to go too!

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Overall, it was one of the best Memorial Day weekends I have ever had!!  5 sets of trails AND a bike ride in 5 days – BLISS!  This was all followed by an adjustment on Monday night with Nate, who also adjusted the dogs!  (Editor’s note: Whaaaat?!)

Choose Happy - Voltaire

With all of this activity all over the trails, it’s important to care for your body!  The trails do it for the mind and soul – they make me happy… but how about fueling this type of outdoor activity?

My favorite trail foods are usually foods that provide the right amount of sugars and carbs to keep me going, with just enough protein (Editor’s note: Yay, protein!) to fill me up!

Like Laura’s What I Ate Wednesday, I’m going to give you a “What I Ate on the Trails”:

  1. First, I always fuel on Lara Bars, especially the Cashew Cookie.  I also enjoy the Peanut Butter Cookie.  They have none of the crap that many other bars have.  They are simple ingredients of nuts and dates, unless you get fancier versions, but still few ingredients are added.
  2. Typical trail food also includes potato chips and gummy bears!  (Editor’s note: These hot summer months are the time when I’d be with you on the salt!!!)
  3. I also enjoy the following raw veggies as fuel on the trails – these items don’t squish in your pack, and they take a bit longer to digest, so you get a constant supply of the sugar and carbs you need to keep going:
  • Apples
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Sliced Beets
  • Packets of Honey (you can make these at home)
  • The puppies enjoyed some beets while hiking

However, even more than eating just right, it is very important to hydrate!  Sunday, I drank over a gallon of water between breakfast and dinner, and I was still thirsty!  It’s getting hotter, and this is my plug about being smart with hydration (and it doesn’t hurt to throw in some electrolytes like coconut water) so you can go all day and not feel bad!

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and are enjoying the warm summer weather!

***

Just when I think I’m active… I read Kat’s post. 😉

What are your favorite outdoor sports?  Any favorite trails?

Do you like to run or hike with your dogs?

Let in the Big Sunshine

May 28, 2013 By Laura

Sometimes you have to get away.

Away can be 20 miles down the road.

I don’t have a lot of words today.  One of my best friends and I crashed my mom’s house for the weekend.  It was a glorious break, and I am so grateful to my mom for providing us this little oasis of happiness.  I’m still easing back into the “real” world.

The steps to this Operation: Vacation weekend are best recapped in pictures.

gym

Step 1: workout in a deserted gym

pool

Step 2: Find a pool and soak up the sun

Step 3: Make a refreshing watermelon-cotija salad (click image for recipe)

Step 4: Make a big meal of mussles, lamb, swordfish, and veggies on the grill and share with friends.

Step 5: Don’t forget dessert

Step 6: Wake up on day 2, don’t shower, and lounge in the pool all day

Step 7: Enjoy freshly picked strawberries. Puree them into margaritas. Forget to take pics.

Step 8: Have massive dinner. Get seconds. Then thirds.

***

Step 9: Drive home.  Whimper at the thought of work.  “Write” short blog post while reliving the fun memories and thinking happy thoughts about your mom, sister, and friends.

What was the best part of your weekend?

How tempted were you to call in sick today?

What I Ate at Blend

May 22, 2013 By Laura

Everyone in a while you meet total strangers who aren’t.

I swear that made sense in my head…

I hope I’m not the only one that feel like they “know” bloggers.  So many of the fabulous ladies I met at Blend this past weekend are bloggers I’ve been reading for so long that I felt like they were my “real” friends already!

First, I have to say a huge THANK YOU to Janetha, Lindsay (with credits for the following pic), and Katie for putting together another life-changing weekend!

Heather, Me, and Lindaay

Heather, Me, and Lindaay

Second, I owe a big thanks to Growing Naturals for sponsoring me at the retreat.  These guys are truly a great example of a small business offering good, clean products.

I was so thrilled to share their pea and rice protein powders and their protein drink mixes with my friends.  More on their products here.

Growing Naturals at Blend 2013

I know Bonnie was extra-excited to try this after the 9 mile run they did in the chilly Park CIty rain!

My friend Heather already used hers and shared a pic on Instagram:

Growing Naturals protein shake

It was also the start of my first post-workout recovery meal.

The vanilla rice protein was fabulous in my green smoothie (extra spinach!) topped with Muesli Fusion:

Stay tuned – this fall they are coming out with a new addition to their protein/supplement line – yummy greens to throw into shakes!!!

Rather than a “traditional” WIAW post, today is all about What I Ate at Blend!  We were totally spoiled all weekend, and I’m still enjoying all the tasty schwag-bag selections at home. 🙂

Check out my eats with my Blends below, and then click here to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons to get to see what delicious foods everyone else is enjoying!

Friday:

We arrived at the hotel excited and famished from travel.  Famished.  The schwag gods were smiling though… check out all the goodies we had to munch on: protein from Vega, Zevia, SoyJoys, a Lara Bar, muesli and granola from Bob’s Red Mill, Attune Foods chocolates, Healthy Bites (so in love)…. and more!

Blend schwag

After a photo ops, we gabbed, snacked… and headed to event #1: a pre-happy hour with Justin’s Nut Butter!  I was careful to sample everything, but stopped for a pic with one of the lovely organizers – Katie!

My top butters were: Maple Peanut and Chocolate Hazelnut.  They were even better on Attune Foods graham crackers.  All I needed was some apple juice.

Blend Justin's snack

The kind folks at Silk must have wanted to make absolutely sure the Blends were happy, so they set up a Happy Hour where we could unwind from travel and begin the photo-taking frenzy.  Heather was patient enough to take a gorgeous pic of her ginger-Silk drink.

There was also an amazing buffet of black bean cakes, veggie summer rolls, and cute veggie sticks in jars (how did they know bloggers like Mason jars?!).  Let’s pretend like I didn’t attack this… the temptation was too tasty and I couldn’t wait until dinner!  Plus, we all know it’s bad to drink on an empty tummy. 😉

Blend Silk happy hour

Dinner itself was off the chain.  It was a buffet… but a good buffet.  Normally I’m anti due to the rogue dirty hands and food sitting out too long.  That didn’t happen here.  My Blends were nice and clean, and the hotel staff couldn’t have done a better job and keeping the food refreshed.

There were salad options, quinoa patties, roasted veggies, chicken breasts, and lemon-y fish filets.  There was literally something for everyone!  And it was all good!

Blend Dinner 1

No dinner is complete without dessert!  there was Chobani panna cotta, apple pie, and berry tarts.

A few of us decided to split all 3… which I graciously finished off.  Starving kinds in Africa, you know.

I heart dessert

Thanks to Lindsay for this artful photo.

Saturday:

One would think that after all that I’d still be full… well, GPP Fitness fixed that with a little workout that left me waddling.  More on that tomorrow but let me just say 200 burpees (I did refuse to yell “Yay burpees!” after each rep as instructed) is a certain cure for lack of appetite.

The highlight of breakfast for me was getting to try a new granola – Muesli Fusion.  They have an “Athlete’s Fuel” mix that rocks my socks off.  NO added sugar or sodium, and 7g of protein per serving.  It’s like they designed it for me.  I poured my unsweetened Silk all over that!  There was a ton of fresh fruit (holy pineapple deliciousness), and a fabulously strong brew from Green Mountain coffee.

Blend breakfast - museli fusion

Then we had another workout!  Zoomba.  I’ll spare you the pics of this white girl shaking her thang… until tomorrow. 😉  Following that we did what any normal blogger does – we went to Whole Foods.  I totally failed at life and didn’t take a pic.

I DID take a pic of the snack break that followed – Onnit provided us with some amazing chocolate-banana hemp protein smoothies and rice cakes with cashew-walnut butter (totally crave-worthy). What’s better than these blogger staples?  Getting them handed to you by Miss United States!  Whitney is one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met.  How cute is she?!

Onnit at Blend

And then there was dinner.  Calee, Michelle, Heather, Heather, Heather (that’s not a typo – there were 3 beautiful Heathers) found an amazing restaurant on Main St. in Park City called Riverhorse.  The food was incredible.

We started with a great Pinot Noir, chosen by fellow-wine lover Michelle (who I will gush about meeting later) and a beet salad served with micro greens, brie cheese, and a potato crisp with tarragon vinaigrette.  Calee and I split the Trio of Wild Game for our entrée.  It came with buffalo, venison chop, and elk over broccolini and asparagus with a port wine and huckleberry reduction.

I was nice and full… but when I saw the dessert menus I had to place one more order.  Peanut Butter Bread Pudding with caramelized bananas and a chocolate drizzle.  Can you blame me? 🙂

Riverhorse in Park City, UT

Every dish was near perfection.  Lucky because our server was terrible.  I swear I have the worst luck.  She basically ignored us all night, added 20% gratuity (for a party of 6 who was clearly spending money… WTF?!), and when Heather asked about the charge (there was NO warning note on the menu) she snatched the bill out of Heather’s hand and stalked off.  We tipped the man refilling our waters in cash on the side and spoke to the manager on the way out.

Like I said, the food was great.  That combined with the fantastic company made for a great evening and we laughed about our crazy experience all the way back to the hotel (the cab driver was thoroughly entertained).

Sunday:

Holy breakfast heaven.  This was the best breakfast out of any Blend Retreat.  They had an omelette station!!!  Protein at breakfast?!  Color me happy.  Thank you for this sponsored deliciousness, Chobani!

I got an egg white omelette with mushrooms, garlic, onions, and spinach.  And a Chobani yogurt pancake.  And fruit.  I wanted ALL the foods! 😉

Chobani Blend breakfast

Be sure to check the #blend2013 hashtag on Twitter and Instagram for more action from the weekend!

***

I snacked my way back to ATL with schwag bag goodies, and (obv) hit the Whole Foods hot bar immediatly after getting home. 😉

Soooo… are you all going to come to Blend next year with me?

Have you ever tried any of these fun products?  What are you loving right now?

Travel Meals, Roasted Wins, + Jillian Michaels

April 22, 2013 By Laura

Traveling to pretty locations is fabulous.

And then you come home…

Last week I was in Arizona at the Camel Back Inn with my mom.  You guys saw part of my travel meals Wednesday.  I made it – and I ate pretty well!  In fact, often I was more happy to be eating my food than the resort food!  That, the fact that I didn’t give in to the temptation of a tasty margarita in the desert sun… the overall sense of accomplishment… is carrying over today to make my Monday Marvelous.

Marvelous Monday

Breakfast was easy – oatmeal all doctored up with my delicious Growing Naturals protein and berries and cinnamon from the hotel.  I also asked for lots of lemon.

Best eaten with beautiful patio view!

Arizona breakfast

Some of my other meals are below: I took lots of fresh veggies, sweet potatoes, bison burgers, no-salt deli turkey, and baked chicken.  And my delicious greek yogurt dessert creations.

I was able to get plain salmon and brown rice from the hotel, which helped a lot.  I brought my own nutritional yeast, but remember you can always ask for seasonings – lemon, vinegar, red pepper flakes are my standard requests.

Travel meals

travel meals 2

Two favorites:  the cucumber-mint “mocktail” on the bottom right above was a fantastic refresher at the spa restaurant (See my mom in the background?  She was Instagramming her carrot-apple juice!).  My last meal (on the bottom right above) was on the airplane.  Sweet potato, turkey, and a fresh salad purchased at Wendy’s (surprisingly fresh and tasty!) in the airport before take off.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Despite all the fun, it was nice to be home in my kitchen.  Saturday I got up and went to posing practice, followed by a killer leg day (seriously – SO SORE today).  After all my travels there was NO food at my house so I had a great time reloading at the farmer’s market.  Sea Bass must be in season because this was some of the best I’ve ever had.  Buttery, moist (sorry), and not at all fishy.

Served with sautéed shiitake mushrooms, spinach, eggplant, and edamame.

Sea Bass

I also roasted a kabocha squash with cocoa powder, cinnamon, and cayenne.  It sounds strange, but it is GOOD!

No real measurements… I just sprayed my squash with some coconut oil and tossed it together.  I roasted it at 350 until tender.

Kabocha Squash

Sunday was softball day.  We won the game… I slid into 2nd base at one point.  Maybe not the best decision 2 weeks before a competition because my knee got a little scraped up.

BUT I was safe.  And then I scored.

scraped up

That didn’t hurt nearly as bad as the split I did off 1st base to catch a ball.  Note to self: splits are not a good idea the day after heavy leg day.

I missed the second game because I had to shower off in order to meet a friend to see Jillian Michaels!!!  I still had to run my sprints, so I just ran them on the way to the show (about 2 miles away) instead of driving.  Haha.

Jillian was good… but a lot of what she said I already knew.  Don’t eat crap.  If you want to lose weight, burn more calories than you eat.  It was refreshing to hear someone talk about the basics though.  No “special” diets.

The secret to being in shape is that there is NO SECRET!  Eat good, clean food.  Eat it in moderation.  Exercise.  Why can’t I get paid millions to tell people this?!

The best exercise

My favorite part was when she talked about exercise.  She called people out of their half-assed elliptical-while-reading-a-magazine workouts.

Raise your heart rate.  If it’s not high enough, move your ass faster.

I also loved that she wore flip flops.

What really got me was what happened in the audience in front of us.  These two (obviously drunk) girls were there… which was funny at first that they were drunk at a fitness event.  It became un-funny when one of the girls PUKED.  I can’t even make this shit up.

They were clearly old enough to know better.  They even looked pretty fit.  I was embarrassed for them.  Cheers to not being that girl.  Not that I ever puked in a nice theatre (or anywhere in public), but I have had my moments.  What I am grateful for – what is marvelous – is that I’ve gotten past that in my journey and am in a happy, healthy place.  one where I know I’ll wake up tomorrow without a headache and sore only from my workouts.

Before you think I didn’t rest at all, I did stay home Saturday night at watch Life of Pi.  It was ok… I liked Argo better.

Does anyone have a magic trick for healing a knee scrape quickly?

What is your favorite part about where you are right now in your journey?

Yes, I Got Through Security + WIAW

April 17, 2013 By Laura

Traveling doesn’t have to be hard.

Step 1: Choose your companions wisely.

I’m 3 weeks out from my next competition.  And I’m in Arizona this week.  Trying to get in 7 lean meals a day is NOT an easy thing to do on the road.  As I’ve described (in greater detail) before, I simply bring my own.

Healthy food to go

My diet changes this week mean no fat, no sodium, and a more limited list of fruits and veggies (to avoid bloating).  I packed enough food to eat 6 meals per day, and I carried it ALL on.  No checked bags.  The unplanned meal is one I can get at the spa restaurant where we’re staying (I called ahead).

And yes, you can make it through security with a lot of unmarked powders. 😉

Traveling with supplements

We left after Meal 2 today, so 5 of my 7 WIAW meals were all eaten on the road.   It was actually fun!  This trip I rocked the desserts.  Hard core.

Check out my 7 low fast, low-sodium, protein-filled meals below, and then click here to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons to get to see how more normal people are eating!

Meal 1:

My morning cocktail (apple cider vinegar, water, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos).  This is the one thing I haven’t figured out on the road since ACV is a liquid and that won’t fly.  I savored my last one for the week.

Then I rocked a workout in one of my favorite race t-shirts in honor of Boston.  I was a sweaty mess for breakfast, which was a cherry PB & Jeggs… on top of a corn tortilla.  Not gonna lie, it would have been better on an english muffin.

Meal 2:

My last meal at home.  This was straight up awesome – the best sea bass I’ve ever made.  I don’t think it was my preparation so much as it was the freshness of the fish.  I guess they’re in season?!

For my side I had a quick salad of cherry tomatoes, raw zucchini, basil, red pepper flakes, and rice vinegar.

Meal 3:

Lunch on a plane.  I packed up my version of a chopped salad – chicken baked in Ethiopian spices,  cauliflower, celery, celery leaves, and cubed sweet potato.

Meal 4:

Bison on a plane!  With cauliflower and snow peas by the light of my laptop.

My mom was staring at me in disbelief.  She even said “I can’t believe you were the kid who wouldn’t eat anything but bologna every day.”  My, how times have changed… and she was jealous because all she’d had time for that day was a shake and a bar.  Bwhahaha!

Meal 5:

We were both famished when we reached the hotel.  Our room wasn’t ready, so we enjoyed dinner on the patio looking out at the mountains.

I ordered a simple salad (that dressing wasn’t used) and then added my own no-salt turkey and a side of sweet potato.  I wanted to leave the ‘tater on the foil… I thought it was funny… but Mom got embarrassed and told me to put it on the plate.  LOL!

Bring your own protein and sweet potato to restaurants!

Meal 6:

We went for a long walk and checked out the spa (where I’ll be all day – OMG their gym is NICE).  On the way back we swung by one of the restaurants at the property where I obtained a plate and silverware.  Eating out of a baggie isn’t the end of the world, but if you can have a real plate… well, that’s just better.

Mexican baked chicken with cauliflower and snow peas.  I had cauliflower to use, can you tell? 😉

Meal 7:

This is part of my dessert creation success.  I took individual containers of non-fat Greek yogurt and mixed them with oats, a fruit, and various flavors.  Then I cover them in foil and place them in the freezer.  This way, when I pack them, they also act as an ice pack for my other food.

Fro-yo to go

Tonight’s selection was mashed blackberries, cinnamon, stevia, and cocoa powder.

Just as good as the creations I make at home, my friends!

Sitting on that patio at dinner in that dessert spa atmosphere I wanted a margarita so bad.  I texted my trainer to beg.  He said no and that I would appreciate it on competition day.  He’s right… but damn.

Did you #workitout for Boston yesterday?

Have you ever whipped out your own food at a restaurant?  I’m shameless.

Work It Out: Chest & Biceps

March 12, 2013 By Laura

Chest and Bicep day is my favorite.

My trainer says this means I’m like a guy.  Whatever.

A few weeks ago I posted about working out away from home.  I am a consultant, which means I travel a fairly often.  You guys have seen they way I pack days and days of meals for the road.  It takes effort, but it – like most things – becomes habit and gets SO much easier.

Workouts are a little harder.  It is a habit, but you never know what the hotel gym situation will be.  In my last post, I talked about learning to be flexibly inflexible.  My daily workout is a habit – one that I am inflexible about breaking.

Flexibility is also important.  Those hotel gyms are 95% of the time pretty sparse.  I have to be able to change my planned workout to fit the situation.

Habit

The previous hotel workout was a back and tricep day re-created in a gym equip only with free weights, a bench, and a stability ball.but got a few requests for the chest and bicep workout. Ask and you shall receive! 🙂

Simple to do with minimal equipment, the following workout was done in that same small hotel gym.

________________________________________________________________________________________

For each exercise, do 3 sets of 10-12 reps.  If you are lifting heavy, do 4 sets of 6-10 reps.   Click the links below for a written explanation of each move.

If you realllly want to shake it up and shock your body, do what I’m doing right now: 5 sets of 12.  You.  Will.  Die.  (Please don’t do this if you aren’t already lifting a lot – no need to actually die.) 😉

Chest & Biceps

Chest

Flat Bench Press

Bench Press with dumbbells

Incline Bench Press with a twist

As you press up, twist the wrist so that at the top of the movement the palms are facing away from the body.  If this causes discomfort, simply leave the twist out.

Decline Bench Press

Stability Ball Pullovers…

…superset with push ups

Biceps

Prone Incline Curls

These can also be done over a stability ball.

Alternating Bicep Curls

If you aren’t doing these with heavy weight, try them while standing on one leg for an added challenge.

Hammer Curls

To change it up, try doing these as alternating curls, or cross-body.

***As usual, here’s the disclaimer: I’m not a certified professional anything.  Be smart.  Don’t hurt yourself.  Don’t expect to have Jamie Eason arms the day after.  I work out all the time and I still don’t have her arms.  Dammit.**

***

Yesterday I did a back and tricep day.  Every back exercise was superset with horizontal pull ups.  By the end I’d done 240 of them.  I’m surprised I’m able to type right now.  LOL!

Did anyone try a new supplement after last week’s post?

Have you ever combined Chest and Biceps?  I know it’s more traditional to do Back and Bis, but I’m loving this method!
