High Fat Fail + 5-Spice Roasted Veggies

January 14, 2013 By Laura

Ever think something sounds fun… only to learn it is just the opposite?

I wish I didn’t make this mistake so often…

Last week I decided to experiment with a high-fat/low-carb diet.  Nut butter, oils, avocados, nuts, egg yolks, red meat… it sounded like a brilliant idea!  Notsomuch.

Nut butter needs toast or oats.  ‘Nough said.  It turns out that all of those thing are delicious… but much better with a carb.  Runny eggs need a piece of bread to soak up the goop.

Red meat is better on a bun… but this was still good:

Bison burger topped with a runny egg

But it wasn’t just the carbs that had me regretting the high fat thing.  Regret is the wrong word.  I learned a lot, and I do not regret that.  Here are the side effects:

  • Constipation – this was the worst; I am grumpy without a good morning poop (TMI?)
  • Gas/Bloating – I could clear a room in 5 seconds
  • Lower energy – I felt like I was in slow motion
  • Slower muscle recovery time – leg day soreness lasted FIVE days
  • Hunger – fat digests faster than carbs, so I would eat and be hungry an hour later
  • Lower veggie intake – veggies have carbs and I found myself cutting them in order to keep my carbs low
  • Flat muscles – even after a hard bicep day I didn’t have the same “pump” I usually do

Polar FT4 Chest and Bicep Burn

Hard workout, yet pretty flat-looking

PLEASE do not take this as a deterrent if you are on/want to try a higher fat diet yourself.  Like I said in the ab/nutrition post, diet is personal.  This was just my experience.  Don’t be afraid to experiment!  You will learn a lot about your body.

________________________________________________________________________________________

One of my favorite things about Heather’s Meatless Monday challenge is that it forces me to try new things.  Like this week – Turnips.

BWV-January

I know I’ve had turnips before… but I can’t remember when!  After a little research I learned that turnips are a lot like rutabagas, and have a potato-like taste (but better…. I hate potatoes).  Long ago I made Rutabaga Fries, complete with a vegan cheese sauce.  I liked it, but for some reason I don’t often buy veggies in that family.

Sunday while on my weekly grocery trip I picked up a turnip.  When I got home I realized I had no idea what to do with it… but with potato on the brain, I decided to make a roasted veggie dish using another fun find: a purple sweet potato!  It tastes a lot like a sweet potato, but slightly less sweet.

I diced my new finds and tossed them with the usual suspects: oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion, and rosemary.  Then I decided that such cool veggies couldn’t be treated in such a pedestrian manner.  And that’s how I ended up with Roasted Turnips & Purple Sweet Potatoes with Five-Spice.  And brussels, but that’s too long of a title. 😉

A little sweet from the ‘taters, heat from Chinese 5-Spice, and a whole lot of staying-power from the starchy.  I’ll be enjoying this in my packed lunches at work all week.  If it lasts that long.

Five-Spice Roasted Turnips & Purple Sweet Potatoes

Five-Spice Roasted Turnips & Purple Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 turnip
  • 1 purple sweet potato (can use regular sweet potato)
  • 1/4 C red onion
  • 1 T fresh rosemary
  • 1/2 tsp olive oil extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder*

Preheat to 450°F.

Slice turnips and potato into 1/2-inch-thick cubes.  Toss with onion, rosemary, oil, garlic, and 5-spice in a roasting pan until well coated.

Roast  for 20-25 mins, stirring once halfway through.

*Note: Chinese 5-spice can be found at most major grocery stores and Asian markets.  It’s a blend of Szechuan pepper, cinnamon, fennel seed, cloves and star anise.

I told some of you today would be it, but the 6 hour endurance training cram session recap is coming tomorrow… sorry!

Have you experimented with your diet?  What did you learn?

Have you ever seen a purple sweet potato?

Junk-Free January + Polar FT4

December 30, 2012 By Laura

This is not a resolution post.

Ok, maybe it sort of is…

Happy New Year’s Eve!!!

2013 is going to be the year of going BIG.  To start it off, I’m implementing Junk-Free January.  For me, this means being diligent about following my nutrition plan, eliminating the processed foods, and staying off the sauce.  (I’ll miss you, red wine.)

JFJ

I’ll also be placing more emphasis on being present during my workouts.  I want to maximize my time in the gym by giving my all and making sure my form is on point.

My second figure competition will take place at the end of March, and I hope to do a few more throughout the year.  Focus and discipline will be the name of the game.

Bad diet

As luck would have it, I received an opportunity through the FitFluential Ambassador program to review the FT4 Heart Rate Monitor by Polar USA.

I’ve never worn a heart monitor (HRM) before.  All I really knew of them was my dad used to wear this plastic thing around his chest while on the treadmill.  (He was drinking protein shakes and preaching about “bad” carbs before it was “cool”… in fact, we called him “weird.” LOL!)

Honestly, I didn’t think HRMs were relevant to me because I lift weights.  HRMs are for runners… aren’t they?  Wrong.

The FT4 consists of 2 pieces – the watch and a strap (a WearLink transmitter).  I wondered if the strap would bother me while working out, but I honestly forgot the soft band was there.  The five buttons on the wrist watch are easy to navigate..  Being the man stubborn person I am, I set the watch up without consulting the directions.

As someone who obsessively tracks what goes in my body in effort to gain muscle weight efficiently, the Smart Calorie feature is my favorite.  It tells you how many calories you are burning in real-time throughout your workout.  Seeing that against my heart rate “zone” was extremely helpful.  I geeked out.

We all know that knowing your heart rate during exercise is the only truly accurate way of measuring effort exerted.  Logically I know that weight training burns calories, but as a former runner I still have a problem getting out of the “cardio is the only way to burn a lot” mentality.  I burned 369 calories during a back and tricep workout!  I reset the watch to checked out the afterburn.  Again, I was shocked.  In the hour following my weight session, I burned another 150 calories.

My FT4 is going to be invaluable this competition season!  The information I’ve gain has shown me I was not eating enough calories in my post-workout refuel.  Now that I know how much I am burning of, I’ve added another 100 calories to my post-workout snack.

I made my traditional non-traditional smoothie, but amped up the toppings.  This is a chocolate version (use chocolate protein powder instead of vanilla) of my zucchini bread smoothie.  I added oats and edamame to the top to bulk it up.  Strange… but good.

We all know life isn’t all rainbows and butterflies.  There are a couple of things I don’t like about the FT4:

  1. If you want to record your data online, you have to buy the data transmitter separately
  2. The app only works with the iPhone 4S and 5 (I have the 4)
  3. Mine is pink… but there are other colors available… I’m not complaining or ungrateful.  This tool rocks… I just don’t like pink. 😉

Want one of your own?

The Polar FT40 retails for $89.99., and h.h. gregg has given me a $100 gift card to pass along to one of you!  you may use the $100 toward anything (though I do recommend the Polar FT4).

Orange Cardamom TVP “Oats” + WIAW

December 12, 2012 By Laura

105 lbs doesn’t seem like a ton.

Until it’s on your lap while you’re doing dips…

Normally I do legs (my least favorite) with my trainer, but last night I had a back and tri day.  It was a great reminder that – even though my upper body is more developed – I still need a “check up” every so often.  With a little help I can move SO much more weight.  I couldn’t have stacked those weights on my lap by myself… and there is no way in hell I would have turned that last set into a drop set.

I’m feeling much better with my diet after last week’s adjustments, and it’s paying off.  My trainer noticed growth.   (He also told me I make sex-like noises while doing hack squats.  Weird that hacking with 200 lbs elicits the same sort of sound…).  A couple of other people have commented recently too (on the gains, not the noises).  Never in my life did I think people telling me I look bigger would be a compliment! 🙂

It is a little disconcerting to have lost my abs, but I know they’ll be back and looking better than ever after bulking season.  I need to print that reminder out and tape it to my mirror.

My Kitchen Workout (have you joined?) is keeping me motivated an (mostly) on track during this month of indulgences.  Jenn’s What I Ate Wednesday theme this month is also a great accountability check!

Below is a day of a figure competitor’s bulking-season eats.  Check it out, and then be sure to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons and see what everyone else is eating during the most delicious time of year.

Meal 1:

I started my day with the only thing I like to repeat: my morning cocktail (mix of Apple Cider Vinegar, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos), and my 2 mile incline walk.

Then it was time for a breakfast I started dreaming up on Sunday.  This is a new version of my TVP oatmeal, and it may be my favorite one yet!

Indian Spiced TVP Oats

Orange Cardamom TVP “Oatmeal”

  • 1 C water
  • 1/3 C TVP
  • 2 T oats
  • 1 tsp ground flax
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp coconut extract
  • 4-5 drops lemon liquid stevia (or sweetener of choice)
  • 3 T egg whites
  • 1/2 orange, sectioned
  • Unsweetened coconut flakes, to top
Prepare according to these instructions from the original recipe.  Top with orange sections and coconut. Demolish.

Meal 2:

Last week I rocked a chili-lime crab salad with mango for lunch.  This week I was ready for more… but needed to make it strangers for this Friday’s link up.  Being strange pays off, friends.  This one was a hit!  The sweet citrus from the orange was perfect against the tangy lime and heat of the cayenne.

Curried Chili-Orange Crab Salad

  • 3 oz crab
  • 1/2 large orange, sectioned
  • 1/2 C edamame
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Juice from 1/4 fresh lime
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp curry powder
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste
  • Cilantro

Meal 3:

I had to get a new plate to take to work.  My zoo animal paper plates ran out.  Booooo!

On my pretty blue plats is: Chili Nutty Baked Tofu, celery sticks, a P28 protein bagel, and the last of my favorite hummus.  I get this Roots hummus at Whole Foods.  It’s from Asheville, but I’m not sure if you can get it outside of the Southeast.  If you can, the spinach is worth a try!

Meal 4:

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my new swordfish creation Monday night.  I finally tried making it a different way – I chipped it into cubes, coated it in lime juice, avocado oil, and my Mexican spice blend before cooking it under broil for ~10 mins.  It worked like a charm!

I brought the leftovers to work to be enjoyed over a kale salad massaged with coconut vinegar, fresh orange juice, and nutritional yeast.  Topped with baby bellas and red pepper.  My complex carb was a very tasty Garnet sweet potato.

And I wonder why my co-workers think I’m weird….

Meal 5:

Leftovers from yesterday… a creation that I made for this Friday’s Strange But Good link up.  Are you guys planning to participate?!  I’m so excited to see what everyone comes up with!!

Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Click here for the explanation.

Meal 6:

My trainer’s gym is pretty far away (30-45 mins… or an hour during rush hour…), so I always take a recovery shake to enjoy on the ride home.  After a killer workout, I enjoyed a favorite: Carrot Cake Batter Shake.

Don’t you love when your clean-eating #kitchenworkout meals taste dirrrrty?  I added some kale (clearly not enough since it’s still orange-ish), and stirred in muesli for a chewy happy ending.

Meal 7:

I’m on a serious bender with my 150 Calorie Chocolate Microwave Protein Cake.  Tonight I topped it with a healthy scoop of Arctic Zero Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream and a drizzle of peanut flour sauce. Cherries on top.  Fo’ shizzle.

***

The protein count for the day: 177.2g.  I can almost feel the growth.  Bwhahaha!

It’s been a week… time for another shameless plugs!  I’d love it if you’d click here and “Like” my new Facebook page. 🙂

Do you have a workout partner or trainer that you “check in” with when you need to push harder?

What is the tastiest “clean” food you’ve eaten this week?  Work it out in the kitchen!

Work It Out at the Gun Show

December 11, 2012 By Laura

Did you get your tickets?

Yes, I’m that predictable…

As I collected my things from the security scanner at the airport last Friday, I got a fun compliment from the TSA agent.  I was wearing a sleeveless dress and before I could put my cardigan back on the agent commented on  my guns.  I crack myself up.

In honor of that TSA man, today’s Work It Out is all about the gun show.  Anyone can have defined arms!  Biceps are especially fun to work because they are really responsive to training.  You just have to be consistent and use the proper form to ensure you are reaping all of the benefits from the time you spend in the gym.

Today’s gun show workout is demonstrated by Abdul, a trainer at my gym, House of Payne.  Abdul is a heavyweight competitor; his bicep is bigger than my thigh.  He was also my roommate at the competition I did in November, where he took first place in his class!  Side note: he likes hack squats, which makes him insane.

Today he’s walking us through 3 bicep moves, taking extra care to explain proper form.

  1. Preacher Curls – Many people complain that these hurt their elbows and wrists; I follow the form Abdul explains and no longer have an issue.  These are great for isolating the bicep muscle, as well as developing adjacent ligaments and tendons.
  2. Lying Bicep Curls – This is one you don’t see many people doing, but it is very effective as it forces you to use your arms since your back muscles can do none of the lifting when you are flat on the floor.
  3. Incline Dumbbell Curls – Performing curls on an incline bench helps you to achieve a greater range of motion, stretching out the long head of the biceps.  Why do you care?  Because the long head gives your arms better shape when viewed from the side and it forms the biceps peak that pops when you to flex.

Check out the video below for a video explanation of each move:

I do 4 sets of these at 10-12 reps.  These are just 3 moves, but they are some of the most effective ones you can do.  I credit these with helping me hit a new PR Sunday!

Typically I do biceps in combination with a chest workout.  Find what works best for you!  Some of you runners may want to do biceps alone after logging those miles.

________________________________________________________________________________________

How is everyone doing with the Kitchen Workout?  This time of year it’s all too easy to get carried away, but I have been trying to keep top-of-mind how much better I feel when I fuel my body properly.  These are guidelines that work for me.  Sit down and think about what makes sense for your lifestyle and your goals to come up with a list of your own!

Have you joined the Kitchen Workout?

Last week I did really well, despite some travel.  Weekends continue to be my downfall.  saturday night I could have done a little better than I did… but the next day I hit a new bicep curl PR.  Maybe my body just needed those extra carbs!

As always, feel free to post/pin/tweet the #KitchenWorkout graphic and show your clean eating pride!  Check out this post for tips and recipes!

***

Yesterday I talked about some things I want to do to make the blog more interactive…  that goes for the #workitout too!  My trainer has offered to take requests for videos!  So…

What types of workouts would you like to see more of, or get explanations for?

What is your favorite “vanity” muscle?  I’m all about the gun show.  In case you couldn’t tell. 😉

Pushing Forward

December 10, 2012 By Laura

Time is scarce.

I’m sure that was a newsflash to everyone…

Lately I’ve been struggling with wanting to move forward in several areas of my life, but lacking the time it takes to make the necessary changes.

In the gym I’ve been rushing through workouts because I’m so busy at work.  I’m still putting in the effort, but my rest time suffers.  Last night I took the time to more thoughtfully move through my workout and take the rest I need between sets.  Lo and behold, it paid off!  I hit a new bicep curl PR for the first time in weeks.

I really wanted to tell all of the guys in the weight room, but I managed to bottle my 8-year-old-on-Christmas-morning excitement.  I did tell my concierge and he noted that I look bigger. 🙂

The next thing I’d like to do more with is developing recipes.  My Recipage still needs to be completed, and I have a few new recipes I need to share with you guys from 2-3 weeks ago.  I’ve been too lazy to edit pics.  Is that terrible or what?!

I want to get back to posting more food.  I’m still cooking a lot, but lately I’ve been rushing around too much and not bothering to measure/take “good” pics of anything I’m eating.

Tonight is a great example.  I was in a rush and made my cauliflower pizza crust again.  This time I used different spices that worked really well… but I didn’t write it down.  I also didn’t take a pic… which I really needed to do so I could join Heather’s Meatless Monday A-Z link up.

She might kick me out for this one, but I DID use this week’s ingredient – quinoa – to make a vegan version of my Cauliflower Pizza.  The binders in the crust were a flax egg and quinoa flakes.  Check out the original recipe here.

Recycled pic… but this crust is sturdy enough to eat by the slice!

Finally, I’ve been wanting to make forward progress on is this blog.  My goal is to make it more interactive.  I love all of your comments, tweets, and emails, and I wanted to find ways to be able to get to know you better and make sure I’m posting things you’re interested in.  Step one was the Facebook page I created last week.  (Pretty please “like” me!)  Step two is what I want to share today.

For weeks I’ve been threatening to start a “Strange But Good” link up.  Now that I have a snazzy new logo, I have no excuse not to get it together and brave the Linky thing.  This Friday will mark the first ever Strange But Good Link Up!

Here’s the deal.  A lot of things healthy living bloggers/readers eat wouldn’t be considered strange inside this community; however, your co-workers, friends, and families probably give the strange looks when you load up your sweet potato with almond butter, for instance.  Those things count as Strange But Good!

You get bonus points if it’s a combo that this community would think is strange.  This could be something like my Vegan PB & Zeggs, or this Chocolate Protein Red Cabbage Ice Cream many of you thought was bizarre:

Want to play?

All you need to do is come up with a concoction this week that is Strange But Good.  Just add the Strange But Good logo to your post and link up to your recipe.  (Copy the code below.)  On the Strange But Good post each week, you’ll see a link to add your own recipe and picture at the bottom of the page.

Sprint 2 the Table

Not a blogger?  I still want to see your strangeness!  Send me an email with a picture of you food and a brief description by noon on Thursday and I’ll include it in Friday’s post.

It would be fabulous if everyone would use #strangebutgood in any Tweets and Instragrams of your creations. 🙂

***

I’m SO excited about this link up!!!  I’ve been thinking of how strange a concoction I can come up with to share.  Bwhahaha!

Do you struggle with finding time to make forward progress?  How do you do it?

Is there anything specific you’d like to see more or less of on the blog?

Work It Out with Jody

November 20, 2012 By Laura

New moves are my favorite.

I’m doing many right now and I point my toes down some ski slopes.

Today’s Work It Out post features one of my biggest inspirations – Jody @ Truth2BeingFit.  She is a big fan of changing up workouts to keep things interesting and effective, and her positive energy is contagious.  Take one look at her picture and you’ll see she clearly knows what she’s doing.  AND this amazing lady just celebrated her 55th birthday!

I’m Working It Out this week in a few different ways.  Saturday I went hiking at Red Rocks with Heather and Lauren!

Heather, Me, and Lauren at Red Rocks

________________________________________________________________________________________

I want to thank Laura for inviting me to guest post today!  She is an amazing young (Editor’s Note: It’s so nice to be called young…) woman who knows how to kick some “arse” in the gym! 😉

For those that don’t know me, my name is Jody and I blog over at Truth2BeingFit.  I have been working out for over 30 years & turned 55 on the 15th of this month.  YIKES! Where did the time go!  (Editor’s Note: I sure hope I look half this good at 55!)

I know some may look at my pictures & think I can’t relate BUT I can!  I was heavy as a kid.  I lost weight in high school but did many things wrong on this lifelong journey.  My mantra: ALWAYS LEARNING & ALWAYS A WORK IN PROGRESS.

Laura asked to me to share a couple of workout moves that are different from the norm to help you mix it up in the gym & work your body in different ways.  I am a “change agent” in the gym.  I LOVE mixing it up!

I first want to link you to a couple recent posts of mine.  Many people are stuck in a rut using the same attachment for the same move all the time.  Check out this post, Variety is the Spice of Life, Cable Attachment Love!  I also have a post on a variation of drop sets here.  Drop sets are a more advanced move so if you are a beginner, leave this until you have a few months under your belt.

One move I love to do is using a seated row machine for bicep curls with a rope (hammer curls w/rope), straight or cambered bar or even a single D handle.  You will have to use a LIGHTER weight for this move.  Grab the bar, rope or D handle & lie back on the seat of the row machine.  Curl away.  The fact that you are lying & you can’t cheat really stresses the biceps – LOVE IT!  You can also do this by placing a mat on the floor by the bottom rung of a cable machine.  With your feet closest to the cable machine, grab attachment, lie back & curl!  (Editor’s Note: This is how I do them – SO effective!)

Another move is to place a bench by the cable machine.  Place one of the attachments in the paragraph above on the lowest rung of the cable machine.  Grab the attachment & lie back on the bench with your head closest to the machine.  From here, you can do lying cable triceps extensions/skull crushers.  Use a stability ball to engage the core or if there is not a bench available.  Always use proper form!  It is easy to hurt the shoulders if you are not very careful with form!

I would like to finish by saying that always be true to you!  There is no “my way or the highway.”  Find what works for you.  Of course, if you are new to lifting, you want to learn the traditional way of lifting with proper form.  Learn to listen to your body and how everything feels from day one – get that mind/muscle link!

Once you become more advanced, you can start putting programs together that meet your needs – not that friend or other person in the gym.  Life changes, we change, our body changes, our goals change along this lifelong journey.  Always work toward finding that best for you.  This does not mean we can’t learn from others BUT it does mean that we learn to recognize what works best for ourselves.

Thanks again to Laura for inviting me to guest post!  Please feel free to email at jody @ truth2beingfit.com with any questions… although Laura knows her stuff! 🙂

***

Thank you for showing us some new moves, Jody!  I’ve never thought to use the row machine for curls… can’t wait to get back and try it out!

Did anyone try last week’s 1 1/2s?

Has the way you workout changed over time?  How so?

What I Ate Without a Plan + NuttZo Winner

November 14, 2012 By Laura

Eating is fun.

Sometimes too much fun.

My trainer still hasn’t sent my new nutrition plan… he was going to this past weekend.  I could remind him… but I’m kind of enjoying designing my own.  I still feel like I deserve it after all that asparagus.

So happy to be back in the gym!!!

Eating several small meals is something I enjoy, so I have kept that concept.  I did eliminate one meal… 7 was a LOT to fit in.  I am also trying to keep the protein count high.  My new workout plan is all about building muscle through low reps and heavy weight.  It’s important to fuel that muscle growth properly!

_______________________________________________________________________________________

This month’s What I Ate Wednesday is about good habits.  I’m learning what that looks like for me on the off-season.  While I do enjoy a small treat each day to avoid feeling deprived, my focus is on eating a clean, low sugar diet filled with protein, complex carbs, and seasonal foods.

Check out my semi-good habit eats below, and then click here to head over to Jenn @ Peas and Crayons to get to see how everyone else ate on Election Day.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Breakfast:

After the usual morning cocktail (mix of Apple Cider Vinegar, Glutamine, and Fitmixer Aminos) I did a little kitchen experimenting.  This baked oatmeal recipe is still in draft-mode, but let me know you… it’s going to be epic.

I also ate a mixture of Greek yogurt, peanut flour, flax, cinnamon, and stevia (that also the “icing” on my oatmeal creation).  That was topped with melted blueberries (frozen berries microwaved until juicy, ~15 seconds).

Mid-Morning Snack:

I legit love salmon.  This one I baked with lemon, pepper, sage, and dill.  Eaten with fresh raspberries. I can’t believe how bright and flavorful these winter berries are!

Lunch:

I have been craving brussel sprouts and parsnips.  Roasted in the oven until they are close to burned.  Tempeh is another oven-roasted favorite.  It gets crispy on the outside – almost like eating a crouton.  Which is why the whole thing went on top a bed of spinach with some leftover Kiri squash.

I loved the mix I tossed the veggies and tempeh in pre-roast:

  • 1.5 tsp salt-free BBQ spice blend (you could sub any mix here)
  • 1 T nutritional yeast
  • 1 T coconut vinegar

Afternoon Snack(s):

Today was leg day.  My workout was scheduled right at snack time.  I hate workout on of a full stomach, but I really didn’t want to feel hungry half way through my workout – especially on a leg day!  So I split up my snack

Pre-workout I had a raw French green beans, pumpkin hummus, and a ground chicken slider.  Why I’ve never used ground chicken before?!  These burgers are awesome.  All I did was mix in some spices, diced red pepper, and onion before tossing them in a pan (~4 mins each side).  Easy, delicious, and SO much better than cleaning up raw chicken breast.

Post-workout I drank a lot of water and an EAS drink.  I haven’t been drinking these lately, but I do really like the Chocolate Fudge flavor… and I had a call with my boss, so fast and easy was key.

Dinner:

Cold weather makes me want Italian food.  This is the simplest of Italian foods.  I layered red wine tomato sauce with eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, and red pepper in a baking dish and cooked it in the oven (@ 375 convection) for 45 mins.  I also added some Cabot clothbound cheddar to the top.

My protein was swordfish.  Despite eating it daily during my competition prep, I’m not sick f it.  You really can’t go wrong with the steak of the sea.

Dessert:

Brass monkey, that funky monkey… I made Zandra’s Spunky Monkey Pumpkin Pie.  I only had 1/2 a can of pumpkin left, so I but the recipe in half and  made muffins.  I also added 1 tsp of apple pie spice, 1 tsp of butter vanilla extract, and 8 drops of Stevia.  Instead of an egg I used 1/4 c egg whites, and I didn’t use the baking soda.  And it was fantastic – like a pumpkin-peanut butter souffle.  I ♥ you, Zandra.

These came out to 8g of protein, so I made some maple-cinnamon protein ice cream to go with it.

Maple-Cinnamon Protein Ice Cream

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp maple extract
  • 7-8 drops liquid Stevia
  • 1/4 C unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 C spinach (optional)
  • Shake of guar gum (optional – used to thicken)
  • Ice
This was a fantastic combo.  I almost made seconds.  Thank god I was too tired.

The off-season protein count for the day: 150.9g  I’m sure my trainer would have it higher, but I’m listening to my body and eating what I want.  Within reason… ‘cause one does not simply eat only one chip.

Do you prefer to eat several small meals, or 3 squares?

What have you been baking lately?

Work It Out 1.5

November 13, 2012 By Laura

I love new versions of things.

Possibly taking it too far…

iPads, clothing, food… you name it, I want to try it.

Workouts are no different.  If I can find a new way to do an “old” exercise, I get excited.  It’s as motivating as having new tennis shoes.

That’s why my Work It Out series focuses on changing up how you perform the exercise.  Writing all-new workouts is fun, but that’s not your only option for continuing to make progress and ensuring you don’t plateau.

The Disclaimer: I am not a certified anything.  I am a figure competitor and I like to workout.  A lot.  Don’t sue me if you hurt yourself or don’t look like Jamie Eason after performing these moves.

1  1/2s

The theory behind this is similar to Fulls & Partials, allowing you to build up the smaller muscles in a group.  This is no as excuse to have bad form or to slack.  Be purposeful about how you are using half reps.  Each half rep is focusing your energy and working your muscles differently, helping to build strength.  These may start easy, but by the time you do 8-10 reps, you will be on fire.  That burn?  It means you’re going to see results.

To execute this technique, do 1 full rep and then do a partial rep.  This completes 1 rep.  You will do 1st and 3rd sets on the bottom half to the mid-point, and the 2nd and 4th sets from the midpoint      q to the top.

How can you use this technique?

Bench Press

Many people think this is just an exercise for big, burly dudes.  Notsomuch.  The bench press is a great exercise for hitting your chest, shoulders, and triceps.  It’s one of the most effective exercises you can do to give shape to your whole upper body.  Not to mention it forces you to engage your core.

To execute, Use an overhand closed grip on the bar.  Your grip width should be slightly wider than your shoulders to help ensure your elbows don’t bend more than 90 degrees as you lower the bar.  Your head, shoulders and butt/low back should remain in contact with the bench throughout the press.  Both feet should stay flat on the ground.  Common thought is that the bar should be lowered until the elbows are bent to 90 degrees… HOWEVER this may vary based on the length of your arms (shorter arms mean you can lower the bar to you chest, while longer arms may not be able to go that far).

Note: This is one of my favorite exercises.  Building up your chest muscles can give the illusion that you have bigger boobs.  I need all the help I can get.

Standing Calf Raises

While the picture above contains a machine, you don’t need any special equipment to do calf raises.  They can be performed on the edge of a stair or a board.  To  make it harder, hold weights in each hand.

Stand tall with your abs pulled in, the balls of your feet firmly planted on the step, and your heels hanging over the edge.  Grip machine handles, or rest your hands against a wall or a sturdy object for balance.  Raise your heels a few inches above the edge of the step so that you’re on your tiptoes.  Push evenly through the entire width of your foot; pushing off from your big toe or the outside edge of your feet is more likely to result in cramping or muscle strains.  Hold the position for 2 seconds before lowering your heels below the platform, feeling a stretch in your calf muscles.

Note: Lift as high as you can onto your toes and lower your heels down as much as your ankle flexibility allows.  This is a great rehabilitative exercise for Achilles tendon injuries (ahem… runners), and for improving explosive movements like jumping or fast starts.  For those of you that wear heels, this will give you calves to-die-for in your party dress.

Caution: It is easy to “over train” with these modifications.  They challenge your muscles to work much harder than usual, so these moves are not recommended as a long-term regimen.  Avoid doing more than 2-3 of these per muscle group on any given workout.
