Starbucks Record & Illegal Birthday Eats

July 16, 2014 By Laura

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like free.

Or cold, hard cash.  Either way.

By now we are all aware of the free Starbucks drink on your birthday.  Even though I didn’t get an offer this year – wtf?!  People like to make a game of how much they can get – whether its a birthday freebie or just to pay too much for already over-priced coffee.  The previous record for ONE drink was $54.74.  Child’s play!

starbucks epic order

A Florida woman managed to order a $60.58 Frappuccino.  According to Consumerist, the drink consisted of 60 shots of espresso, matcha powder (gotta stay healthy!), and caramel, white mocha, and hazelnut syrups. She even brought along a jug for the barista so it would all fit!  I’m assuming she didn’t drink it all… I didn’t see any follow up reports about her having a caffeine-induced heart attack.

Yet another way to order obnoxiously at Starbucks.  You’re welcome.

Going Big with Endurance

July 15, 2014 By Laura

Go big or go home.

That’s my life’s mantra.

Why stop at 10 when you can do 11?  Or 30 when you can be 31.  If I can better myself without damaging myself, I’m going to go for it.  Today I’m bring back Work It Out to focus on endurance.

#MoveHappy: My Favorite Fitness Things

July 14, 2014 By Laura

The only thing I love more than working out is getting new workout-related stuff.

And food.  Obviously.

To start this 3rd week of the #MoveHappy movement out right, I thought I’d share with you some of the marvelous new fitness-related items I’ve been loving lately.

Elvis Jicama Porridge

July 11, 2014 By Laura

The King needs no introduction.

That’s code for “I couldn’t think of anything cleaver.”

Seriously though.  How can you go wrong with peanut butter, bananas, bacon and chocolate?  Maybe if you’re vegan… but you could add TVP bacon or salted nuts instead!  The key is the sweet and the salty.

Elvis Jicama Porridge

You see the good, so where’s the strange?  I’m assuming some of you will think the jicama is (still) strange.  Think of it like chicken.  Or oatmeal if you want a more breakfast-y analogy.  It takes on any flavor.

What results is a bowl of creamy, peanut buttery porridge topped with sweet ‘naners and chocolate with salty deliciousness.  Mmmmm… bacon…

Elvis Jicama Porridge - a healthy, fiber-rich breakfast!

Elvis Jicama Porridge

  • Jicama porridge
  • 2 T peanut flour (or peanut butter)
  • Banana slices
  • Bacon pieces
  • Chocolate Syrup

Prepare jicama porridge according to these instructions, adding peanut flour at the end.

Top with desired amount of banana slices, bacon “sprinkles,” and chocolate syrup.  I made a quick syrup using cocoa powder, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a little stevia.

Devour.

Emergen-Cs and Mock-tinis

July 10, 2014 By Laura

I am participating in a sponsored campaign hosted by Emergen-C® I received compensation for this post. While all opinions stated are my own, I make no claims about Emergen-C as a product or its effectiveness.

I drink a LOT of water.

While I love it, there is a bit of flavor exhaustion.  Or lack thereof.

The problem is there aren’t a lot of flavored alternatives that aren’t filled with bad stuff.  When I had the opportunity to try out Emergen-C, I jumped at it.  Who couldn’t use more vitamins?

They have new Cranberry-Pomegranate flavor that I thought would be an excellent add to my water to break up the monotony.  Even better is that they are fizzy!  I got addicted to sparkling water in Europe and have craved the effervescence ever since.  Emergen-C has over 20 varieties of vitamin drink mixes.  No monotony here!  Plus, all of those B vitamins made for the perfect natural energy enhancement at work.

BBQ Mustard Chicken + WIAW

July 9, 2014 By Laura

I view food as a source of entertainment.

What do you expect from a person who goes to Whole Foods when she’s bored?

Sometimes food prep gets a bit mundane.  When you’re packing up 3-4 meals a day to take to work, there are only so many options.  I wonder if we could get an oven in the office…

This past Sunday marked 6 years since my dad died.  As per tradition, my sister and I spent the day with mom at the house we grew up in.  We grilled out and had a great time eating (my mom has a similar Whole Foods problem – soooo much delicious food!).  It was fun to reminisce and enjoy the gorgeous pool day.  And I got to cook with my mom, which I love!

Grilling with mamma

It was also a good opportunity to food prep in a different way.  I stopped by the farmer’s market on the way to the house and loaded up on chicken, fish, and veggies.  I live in a condo, which means we can’t have grills.  Mom, on the other hand, has a gas grill AND a Big Green Egg.  It’s been the perfect way to add more variety to my prep!

This week I’ve been especially loving the BBQ chicken I made.  It was a really quick marinade, and it packed a punch!  I used smoked paprika and my healthy homemade BBQ sauce (I keep a batch on hand all summer) to heat it up.  They were a great compliment to the tangy mustard.

You could use your favorite store brought BBQ sauce if you don’t have any homemade.  If you’re grill-less like I usually am, this would be fine on a grill pan or baked in the oven.

This WIAW I wanted to eat each meal consecutively.  Between leg day and the excitement of grilled food I was entertained alllll day!

#MoveHappy Week 2: Quest Bars & Nutrex

July 7, 2014 By Laura

Long weekends make me happy.

We really should implement a 2-day work week, 5 day weekend policy.

This weekend was full of happy movement.  Atlanta is home to the world’s largest 10K, the Peachtree Roadrace.  It’s held every year on the 4th.  This is my 5th race; I’ve only missed one since 2008!  I haven’t been running much, but my goal was to finish in under an hour.  I rolled out of bed early Friday morning and took the train to the start line.

I debated going to the convention in town… but nah.

Dips, Dessert, and a Drink

July 4, 2014 By Laura

Happy 4th of July!

aka National Sunburn Day.

I have a tradition of running the Peachtree Roadrace (the world’s largest 10K) and enjoying the sweltering heat sunshine.  Since I’m off doing that, today’s #strangebutgood is a round of of things you might like to enjoy during your weekend festivities.

Some are stranger than others, but I assure you they’re all good.  And they’re relatively quick and easy – especially the oh-so-addicting S’Mores Brownies!
