Breakfasts are often like dessert in my house.
To be honest, many meals are like dessert in my house…
Lately something strange (but good) has happened – I’ve been craving SAVORY breakfasts. I don’t question my body, I just go with it. Savory it is.
I blame Jenn and her preggo bagel talk for this craving (no, I’m not pregnant too – hahaha). I used to love everything bagels… but those aren’t exactly competitor-diet approved.
I have learned that to recreate many unapproved foods, all you need are the right spices. Ezekial bread IS approved, so I used it as the base for an everything schmear.
According to Urban Dictionary, a schmear is:
The addicting trifecta of dried seeds, onion, and garlic tastes just as good in the form of a topping as it does attached to a bagel!
The usual seeds used are sesame and poppy seeds. Poppy seeds aren’t something I keep on hand, but in a particularly inspired moment I added chia seeds instead!
A good schmear must be creamy. I achieved the cream-factor by blending up cottage cheese with my everything flavors, giving this spread a giant protein punch! Out of curiosity I used Two Foods to compare the nutritionals for generic cream cheese and cottage cheese.
I knew cream cheese wasn’t exactly a health food, but whoa… cottage cheese, for the win.
Toast up a slice of your favorite healthy bread and guiltlessly schmear everything on! For sides, I pan-heated some no-salt deli turkey and had a side of blueberries (the craze continues).
________________________________________________________________________________________
Everything Bagel Schmear
- 1/2 C no-salt cottage cheese
- ~2 tsp liquid (I used unsweetened almond milk)
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp butter extract
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp sesame seeds
In a blender, combine cottage cheese, liquid, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, butter extract, and 1/2 tsp chia seeds. Blend until smooth, adding more liquid if needed.
Add remaining chia seeds and sesame seeds. Stir to combine.
Schmear your bagel or muffin and enjoy!
Makes 2 servings.

This everything bagel spice blend has so many possibilities… my mind is churning!!!
What is your favorite bagel schmear?
What was the best part about your weekend? I got a 85 minute sports massage!

For some reason I really like the word schmear, I try to use it whenever I can haha, seriously, it’s an odd quirk.
This looks fantastic, especially because you can eat like quadruple the amount without all the fat and yucky-ness added to other cream cheeses.

Wow, this look delicious and so much better for you than cream cheese. When I was pregnant I lived on bagels and cream cheese… shaking head, it was ugly but that’s what I craved. This is such an easy alternative!

I’m coming to find that cottage cheese is super versatile and I kinda love it! And the best part of my weekend was probably watching Argo – so intense…I was on the edge of my seat the entire time (even thought I knew how it ended)!

You could try it with Greek or tofu too… but between the blending and the flavors I doubt you’d recognize it as cottage cheese.

Dang that sounds so good! Bagel and schmear! I miss cottage cheese and bagels! I have two favorites when it comes to bagels…onion bagel with cream cheese and strawberry preserves. YUM! Sounds strange, but it is soooo good! Second favorite is whole bagel with cream cheese, fresh tomato, lettuce and sprouts. I so wish there were good gluten free bagels…

I love cream cheese and strawberries! That is a great oatmeal combo too.
You should make your own bagels! And I bet this spread could easily be done with tofu.

Great idea! A bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon is one of my favorite foods, but I rarely eat it because once I start buying bagels I’ll end up just going on a bender and eating them every day. I have to keep stuff like that out of my house because I can’t be trusted around it.

Ohhh man, everything bagels are my favorite! I don’t know why I haven’t thought to add that spice/topping combination to other things before–I do believe you’ve just inspired me. What a surprise, right? I don’t know how I decided what to eat before I read your blog, haha. I hope I don’t have to get up close and personal any time soon, because onion+garlic (plus pepper, sesame, garlic) is about to go on everything…

Being Jewish, I knew what a schmear was!
I wish I liked cottage cheese more but I don’t PLUS lactose probs for me… I can figure it out with Greek yogurt or something else.
I used to have a bagel EVERY day & sometimes more when I was younger into the early 40′s before I had to cut back. Now with age, it is just every so often. I LOVE THEM but I do love my healthy breads too!

I think it would work with Greek or tofu. Maybe even a mild squash?
I can’t remember the last time I had a bagel… I use most treat days on red wine and chocolate cake.

I’m sorry, but the whole “my mind is churning” kinda grosses me out…I’m thinking liquidy brains or something…EWW! Lol
Do poppy seeds even really HAVE a taste? I’ve totally subbed chia for them a million and one times!
Seriously, you’ve got me HOOKED on that deli meat! I’ve almost gone through a whole pound of it in less than a week! And how have I been eating it? In perfect #strangebutgood fashion…rolled up with JAM!
Totally jealous of your massage! I’ve never had one over 60 minutes before and while the one the man-friend got me for V-day was good, it just wasn’t the same as when I go to “my girl” at the spa here in town! I really should make an appointment soon…perhaps during my “recuperation time”? I think so!
