Oatmeal Cookie Dough in a Glass

You guys have the best ideas.

I make a LOT of shakes and smoothies (what distinguishes the two, btw?).  Would you believe that you don’t even see half of the craziness I blend up?

There are the favorites that end up in steady rotation:

Apple Pie Smoothie

Banana-Maple-Ginger (pictured with Lisa’s raw cookie dough ball)

Roasted Beet and Orange Smoothie

My all-time favorite…

Liquid Sweet Potato Pie

And my new favorite…

Carrot Cake Batter Shake

Which brings me back to the subject of the day.  When I posted the Carrot Cake Batter recipe, Allie commented that she’s more of a cookie than a cake girl.  She requested an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Shake.

I owe her big time for that request, because this is GOOD.  The test batches weren’t too painful to drink either.

Appropriate for breakfast or dessert, this is one tasty batter.  The mix of oats, banana, flax, and coconut flour give it a fabulously doughy texture.  I almost wanted to pop the mix in the oven once I blended it.

Nutritional yeast may seem like a weird addition, but it have a rich, nutty taste that compliments the sweet flavors in this dough.  The vanilla and cinnamon add to the cookie flavor, and – if you have it – the butter extract just adds a hint of “fresh from the oven.”

Confession: I don’t like raisins (or any dried fruit for that matter).  Feel free to blend a few in for added cookie sweetness, but I – being a good blogger – bought 19 cents of raisins from the bulk bin for a topping to enhance the photo accommodate Allie’s request. ;)

***In any of these shakes, you may leave out the protein powder.  I like the addition because a) protein is good for muscle building/recovery and b) it make it more filling.***

Oatmeal Cookie Shake

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/3 C rolled oats (use gluten-free for a GF shake)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 T ground flax
  • 1 T coconut flour
  • 1.5 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp butter extract
  • 7-8 drops liquid stevia
  • 1/2 C unsweetened almond milk (or other liquid)
  • Ice, to taste
  • 1/8 tsp Guar Gum (optional, but this will make your smoothie thicker)
  • Toppings: crushed walnuts, raisins, cacao nibs (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a high-seed blender and blend until smooth.

Add toppings and drink your dough!

Makes 1 smoothie.

***

Another confession: I didn’t like oatmeal cookies until I was an adult.  I did; however, always like oatmeal.

Have you tried any of these smoothies?

If you could make a recipe request of any blogger, what would it be?

I didn’t start using protein powder until about 8 months ago. Now, it’s my go to snack. I don’t drink it though. I bake with it and make frostings with it. There is something about drinking my calories that just does not appeal to me. I like texture to my food, so I can chew. My current favorite frostings or puddings are mixing vanilla protein powder with pumpkin or applesauce. It makes such a rich and cream treat or topping!

    1. Laura

Sarena. You HAVE to do me a favor and try a shake. I make them so think it’s like eating a milkshake or ice cream. :)

P.S. I’m still thinking about that berry cake. GREAT recipe!

    2. Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

I’m the same way when it comes to “drinking my calories” but seriously, if you make the smoothie/shake super thick and add oats to it or top it with something crunchy like cereal or granola, you really don’t feel like you’re missing out on that chew factor…I promise! :)

  2. Tessa @ Amazing Asset

You have done it again Laura! I bet some of these ingredients add a nice savory taste? I am thinking of the nutritional yeast here, good idea with that addition!
And interesting that you liked oatmeal as a kid and not oatmeal cookies… should have been the opposite haha ;)

    1. Laura

Thanks Tessa! I was a weird kid. Although… the oatmeal my mom made was loaded with butter and brown sugar. :)

  3. Choc Chip Uru

Cookie shake… Healthy cookie shake… Drinkable cookie in my mouth… You and Allie are my Heros… :D

    Cheers

Love this recipe! All I’ve wanted this summer is salads and smoothies so this is perfect!!! I sometimes put things in my recipes I don’t really like either! Then I make someone else taste them!!! Love that you idea raisins for us :)

    1. Laura

Haha – I did that when I made deviled eggs for a party I catered. I HATE them so I made my mom taste test.

  5. Khushboo

Yep this might be your best recipe yet..this sounds SO good! I have no nutritional yeast but I’m all for adding a bit of savory to an otherwise sweet meal/drink….after all sea salt does wonders to chocolate! I’m not surprised this tastes like a cookie though- I always find that the combo of oats, yogurt, cinnamon & vanilla protein powder tastes just like cookie dough :) !

  6. Alex @ therunwithin

I totally just bookmarked all those recipes. I can’t wait to start being able to make smoothies in my new place.

  7. Cait @ Beyond Bananas

YUM! I love oatmeal cookies. They have always been my favorite.. ever since I was young. I will have the give this shake a try!

  8. Lee

I’m not a big smoothie person. I like them, but I like the chew my breakfast in the morning and I’m lazy about the blender! These all look really great though.

    1. Laura

To me the blender is the easiest thing… I just rinse mine with water half the time. Cheers to laziness!

  9. Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean

bahaha love that you bought some just for the topping :)

  10. janet @ the taste space

Your smoothies look so good but I don’t really drink my breakfast in the morning. What does the coconut flour add to this? I have always been curious about blending my cooked oatmeal into a smoothie but have yet to try it… I love how you bought raisins for this, you fabulous blogger. :-)

    1. Laura

I do like drinking my breakfast on workout days – it so much easier than solids for me right before or after a hard workout.

The coconut flour adds doughy texture and a little more nutty sweetness to the taste. I love the silky mouth feel it has!

  11. Tiffany

YUM! I think I’d use crainsins instead of raisins, but YUM YUM YUM. You’d appreciate this… this morning I made an orange-strawberry-hazelnut shake! :D

    1. Laura

Mmmm… that shake sounds so good!

  12. Lisa ♥ Healthful Sense

How about a Chocolaty Chip Cookie Dough Shake made with cocoa powder and cacao nibs! …To go with the raw cookie dough balls ;)
Lovin all of your recipes!! Keep em coming!

    1. Laura

Ohhhh… THAT would be good. More balls!

      P.S. Miss you!

  13. Julie and Brit@twosaucysisters.wordpress.com

Oh baby these look delish! Trying every single one of them! :)

  14. Madison @ Pilates Makes You Happy

Lady this looks great! Peanut Butter Pretzel Smoothie Recipe to come???

    1. Laura

Possibly… I’m not supposed to have a the sodium but I think it sounds like perfect a cheat day shake! :)

  15. Allie

You weren’t kidding! Best. Surprise. Ever. Laura–You are awesome! Lack of high-speed blender aside, I am making this for dessert tonight! Already planning to stop by the grocery store after work to grab a few needed items (butter extract is a thing?? I’m all in). I also LOVE that there is coconut flour in this, I can maybe make a (tablespoon-sized) dent in my barely-used bag of the stuff.

    1. Laura

Awww… thank YOU for the fantastic idea! You can totally do it without a high speed blender. :)

  16. Meg

oh my gosh YES I have tried your smoothies and carrot cake is like my ALL time favourite! Seriously. SO good. I can’t wait to try this one, but I am thinking I’ll still love carrot cake. I need to try your zucchini one though! Shame on me for not doing that yet!

I love you like a sister!

    1. Laura

You have to try and then let me know if carrot is still your fave. It’s a close call for me! :)

      Love you, twin! xoxo

  17. Allie

Oh the things we do for blogging.. I’ve done similar things like buy 19 sets of raisins LOL that made my day!

    1. Laura

LOL! I’m so glad I’m not alone.

  18. Allie

Also, the recipe looks fantastic! I like the addition of butter extract :)

  19. julie

officially making this tomorrow! i’ve been obsessed with sweet potatoes in my smoothies lately! probably because i bought too many last week and now i have to use them up ha ha

    1. Laura

Have you tried butter nut squash in smoothies? That’s another good one!

  20. Jed Gray (sportsglutton)

Some of your shakes make me shake in my boots, but you know how I am about oatmeal cookies….so bring this one on!

    1. Laura

Come on now.. it’s not even green!

  21. Katie @wishandwhimsy

Sounds delicious. A quick question, you said to use nutritional yeast…do you mean the same kind that people use as a “cheese” flavor? Like Bragg’s? Confused…Thanks!

    1. Laura

Yup! Only I think it’s more nutty than cheesy. It works… really. :)

      1. Katie @wishandwhimsy

Wow. I’m nervous. I’ve only used nutritional yeast in my omelets or on kale chips. But I’m going to be brave and I think I’m going to give it a try! The rest of it sounds too incredible to miss out on this!

        1. Laura

Please let me know what you think! It really does add another dimension to the flavor :)

  22. Heather @ Better With Veggies

I love seeing what new and creative smoothies you come up with! I love oatmeal cookies, but rarely have treats like that. And butter extract, really? That is something I would have never guessed existed. I guess I should have. :)

    1. Laura

Yeah! It’s actually easy to find – WF and Publix both carry it here. And it’s vegan!

  23. Stacy @ Stacy Eats

What’s your favorite protein powder? Do you stick to one brand? I just got Vega’s berry flavor and it’s too fake flavorful for me. I think I need a vanilla and a plain.

    1. Laura

My all-time favorite is Sun Warrior Vanilla. It’s love in sodium and calories, doesn’t have sugar, and doesn’t do that weird foamy thing when you blend it.

i agree on the flavored powders, although the AllMax peach flavor I tried last week was actually good.

  24. Carol @ Lucky Zucca

OK you are the smoothie master!!! This looks fantastic. I love oatmeal raisin cookies!! Pinning. now I just need to get my rear to the farmers market for coconut flour. And chia seeds. Still haven’t gotten the chia seeds. I am failing at life! I know I need to email you so we can get together for a walk!! I’m so sorry I’ve been painfully busy these past few weeks. Will email soon! And I’m not sure what recipe I’d ask for, but I know who I’d ask for the recipe and it would be YOU! You’re my culinary hero. Now, im going to stop blowing smoke up your @$$ and get back to work. :D

    1. Laura

I go to the market almost every Sunday if you ever want to go!

You are so sweet… I enjoyed the afternoon smoke break. LOL!!!

  25. Min @ savortherainbow

I just purchased a Vitamix, and the poor thing doesn’t get to showcase its’ maximum potential in this house..Well, looks like that’s going to change from this point on..I just wrote down the recipe and realized I’ve got everything except butter extract and guar gum. I do prefer my smoothies thicker so def going to get that. Do you think butter extract is absolutely necessary? I’ve never even heard of it. I’m a lil hesitant about nutritional yeast, but since you approved, I follow :) .
I’m also going to go through all your other recipes now! Great ideas here! Thanks, Laura!!!

    1. Laura

You can leave out both. I just really like the thickness of the gum. The butter gives it a little baked cookie goodness, but it will still be good without!

  26. Parita @ myinnershakti

This sounds amazing, Laura! I’m making it tomorrow for breakfast. :) Can’t wait!

    1. Laura

Let me know how you like it!!

      1. Parita

Hi! It tasted like an oatmeal cookie! I wasn’t too sure about the nutritional yeast, but it totally worked! Thanks!!

        1. Laura

YAY!!! Did you take a pic?!

  27. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More

Mmmmm that looks and sounds incredible!!

  28. Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen

I’m not really a smoothie maker…but you KNOW I’m down with the flavors of oatmeal cookies. :)
[And I totally would do the same thing with the raisins for the sake of a photo.]

    1. Laura

      Ya gotta try one!!! ;)

You know me and the raisins…. that oatmeal nutty butter sans raisins is the stuff of dreams.

  29. Brittany @ Delights and Delectables

I know what I’m having for breakfast in the morning!! Looks so good girl! I love that you bought raisins just for the topping. lol… I would do something like that!

    1. Laura

Yay!!! Please let me know what you think. :)

  30. purelymichelle

Love smoothies, puddings, everything creamy! This smoothie sounds wonderful.

  31. Laura @ LauraLivesLife

Okay, that’s it. I’m making a smoothie right now. You’ve sold me. I give.

But if this causes a new addiction, I SO blame you.

    Love your recipes, as always!

    1. Laura

Welcome to the dark side. We have cookies… errr… cookie shakes… :)

  32. Sable@SquatLikeALady

Oh God YUM. I miss smoothies!!!! Only 7 weeks and 4 days ;-) hahaha!

I think a shake = a scoop of protein & water or milk, and a smoothie = scoop of protein + mix-ins – like a banana or oats or even spinach :) But I am probably wrong!

    1. Laura

You can make a protein smoothie?! OMG… if my trainer gets that strict on me I’ll cry.

  33. Lisa

This is my type of smoothie! Looks incredible!
I’ve added nutritional yeast to a “cooke dough” pudding recipe on my blog actually. It totally gives it a better cookie dough like texture+flavour.
And coconut flour in smoothies is the best thing ever, gets it nice and thick :D

    1. Laura

Oh cool! I’m going to stalk your pudding recipe. :)

  34. Candy @ Healthy In Candy Land

I don’t like raisins either. Or most dried fruit, for that matter. I’d way rather eat fresh fruit. But I am pretty sure my kids will love this smoothie so I am totally making it for them. And I might have to sample it, just to make sure it turns out right. Before I put the raisins on top.
(I love that you bought raisins just for the photo!)

    1. Laura

I’m the same – why eat dried when you can have the real deal?

  35. RavieNomNoms

This looks SO good! Cookie dough? SIGN ME UP!

  36. Holly

Damn. I know I should have bought bananas at the market this morning. This looks fabulous, and so does the beet shake actually. I make have to make this for an afternoon snack.

    1. Laura

That’s one of my favs – let me know if you do! :)

  37. Lauren

Oh man. I need to make this. I just recently discovered the beauty of nutritional yeast in combination with cookie dough flavor and am in loooooove. It’s amazing how psychological it is to eat something you know is called ‘cookie dough’. It’s healthy? It’s called cookie dough? It’s got protein in it?? I’m in!!

    1. Laura

I know! I almost felt guilty after eating it. Then I did the nutritionals and reassured myself this really is a good fuel-meal. :)

  38. Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

My shakes used to be so boring until I discovered healthy living blogs. The day I added spinach to my smoothie was definitely a turning point for me! Now I will throw just about ANYTHING in my blender (aka food processor because I’m cheap and refuse to buy another kitchen appliance…and I’m still kinda hoping that one day I’ll get a visit from the Vitamix fairy ;) )

Love the photo enhancement raisins! I do that with chia seeds for a lot of my photos even though I really don’t like to add chia seeds on top of stuff…blended or stirred in and soaked is one thing, but when they’re on top of food, I just spend the next 4-5 hours picking them out of my teeth! Oh the things I do for the blog! Lol

I really need to try that roasted beet and orange smoothie, but I still need to try the zucchini bread too! Seriously woman! You’re killing me…I can only eat so many things in one day!! Pizza, shakes, berry cakes, parfaits…give me a day or two to catch up before you go posting any more deliciousness, mmkay?

    1. Laura

I can’t even imagine what would happen if you had a Vitamix. Your head might explode – it’s that life changing. you can literally blend ANYTHING.

Good idea with the chia… right now I sprinkle pepper or cinnamon or dulse flakes on everything.

You are too kind, Ms. Creativity. I don’t blog on the weekend so you have 2 days. Get blending! LOL!

  39. CJ at Food Stories

Oatmeal Cookie Dough Shake looks fabulous :-)

  40. Stephanie @ Eat. Drink. Love.

A shake that tastes like oatmeal cookie dough? I’m sold!

  41. Kat

You ask the difference between smoothies and shakes?? I distinguish between the two. Smoothies have to be blended, and you have to add ice. Maybe they are blended because you have to add ice.

I make breakfast “shakes”–no blender required… I add all the ingredients to a shaker-ball thingy and shake. :)

My current fave: greek yogurt, vanilla protein powder, superfood green juice (Odwalla), a hint of coconut water, and some pureed pumpkin with a touch of cinnamon and salt. YUM. :) –tryyy itttttt… you will not regret it. It is also packed with 40g protein.

    1. Laura

      Ha! I love the distinction.

I make my pumpkin pie shakes almost exactly like that, but I don’t go coconut water. and use fresh spinach. Green smoothies rock!
