Boycotts and Friday Finds

 Please excuse my soap box.

If you live in the South (a.k.a.: the land of Chick-fil-a), then you have probably heard the Chick-fil-a COO made a statement that Chick-fil-a supports anti-gay causes.  This isn’t a political blog, but I was outraged that I felt the need to speak up.

One of the great things about this country is our freedom of speech.  However… it’s hard for me to believe that in 2012 any company would waste their breath with such discriminatory sentiments.  Grow up, Chick-fil-a.

Yes, they have a right to do whatever they please with their influence and their money.  So do I.  That’s why I signed HRC’s pledge to let Chick-fil-a know that I don’t support discrimination.  And I can live without your waffle fries dipped in Polynesian sauce.

 *steps off box*

Now for some positive reporting!  It’s FRIDAY!!!  In honor of my favorite day, here are some of my favorite recent “finds.”

Products, recipes, and blogs I’ve been loving lately:

1. New Flavors

Cake Batter.  Sizzlin’ Bacon.  Double Chocolate.  Caramel.

My favorite is the Cake Batter.  The others were ok, but the Bacon was a little disappointing.  It’s basically like liquid smoke.

These were ordered online thru Capella… the Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli hipped me to the fact that they are even cheaper here.

2. Peach Protein Powder

The guys at my local nutrition store gave me a sample packet of this Peach Sensation protein powder made my Allmax Nutrition.  I wasn’t familiar with the company before, but I will be now!  This stuff was really good.  The ingredients are pretty clean, and it’s low in sodium and carbs, and contains no sugar.

I blended it with cinnamon, ginger, and a little water to make a spiced peach protein smoothie.

3. Runny Eggs, Protein Bagels, and Roasted Cauliflower

Ok, that’s 3 things… but they are all so good!  I got permission from my trainer to have an egg yolk!  this is big news because I am obsessed with runny eggs.  It goes perfectly atop my other new obsession – P28 Protein Bagels.  Just 1/2 a bagel has 14g of protein.  Egg + Bagel = 20g protein

I also am on a cauliflower bender.  Today’s was cheesy chocolate.  I kid you not.  1/2 tsp cocoa powder, 1 T nutritional yeast, 1 T rice vinegar, 2 drops lemon stevia.  Roast.  Devour.

4. Surprises in the Mail

I came home last night to a package from the far away land of Canada.

Meg @ A Dash of Meg sent me a bag of her favorite ginger-flavored David’s Tea!  If you don’t know Meg, you should.  This is literally the sweetest girl I’ve ever “met.”  And we have discovered we’re food twins.  And this tea smells like heaven.

5. Green Spiced Protein Pancakes

I have made some pretty bad pancakes in my day.  This was not one of those days.

When I saw this green pancake recipe by Sara @ Stories and Sweet Potatoes (isn’t that the best blog name?), I knew I had to give them a whirl.  My tweaks were:

  • Add nutmeg
  • Subbed 2 T of coconut flour for quinoa flour
  • Left out yogurt

I made the batter the night before and let it rest in the fridge overnight.  In the morning I dumped it in a well-greased (PAM) pan and made one tasty, gigantic pancake.  Note: Don’t skimp on the spices – go big in order to give the monster some flavor.

Topped with cinnamon, apple, and sugar-free maple syrup.

Bonus: Cold Soup

Ok, this is a little self-promoting, but I really have been loving cold soup in the hot weather.  So much so that when rockstar athlete and foodie Lauren @ Oatmeal After Spinning asked me to write a guest post for her, I decided that would be the soup topic du jour.

Click here to check out my Peach-Cucumber Chilled Soup guest post, and say hi the the vacationing Lauren!

Quote from Trainer Abdul yesterday during a particularly fun set of leg presses:

Don’t cheat yourself, treat yourself.

What is your favorite “find” as of late?

Is there a quote or saying that gets you through “just one more” in workout or situation?

  1. says

I don’t care for such claims and outright anti-gay statements either. Yes I am a Christian, but in my mind that is about love and not judgment. It sickens me when people judge others. I have a gay brother and his choices don’t make me love him any less and I wouldn’t choose to treat someone else any less either. Discrimination and judgment do no good.

    • says

Agree with Tina. Doesn’t Chick-Fil-A make themselves known as a Christian company? It makes me sad that churches/ Christian organizations choose to stand against something when there are so many better things they could be doing with their influence, such as taking a stand FOR something, like the underprivileged and overlooked in society.
And Laura, I want your runny egg and protein bagel! Cucumber peach soup looks awesome, too.

    • says

yes, same here. It saddens me that as a christian company, they are judging. We are suppose to LOVE each other.

I must get this bacon capella drops!

  2. says

I am so with you on Chk-fil-A and boy scouts did the same thing! Tony and I put Jay in boy scouts years ago and he only went to a meeting twice when we realized their stance on gays and religion. I can’t turn a blind eye to organizations that don’t support human rights or have compassion for others. I’m loving my protein cakes this week. Every night is a new flavor adventure. Now I wish I had your extracts…minus the bacon.

    • Laura says

Boy scouts is the other one that blows my mind. And they keep losing in court!!! I am thankful for parent like you who set a good example for their kids by not supporting organizations that endorse discrimination.

  3. says

All the things you love look so amazing!!! Especially the peach protein! Umm I can’t believe that in 2012 a company feels the need to promote that they support discrimination! What?! That is just horrifying to me! Craziness!

  4. says

I honestly never really go to Chick-Fil-A anyway, but Jason said he was no longer going to go after this happened. We do not support discrimination.

  5. says

That cauliflower looks so interesting!! We love interesting, out-of-the box foods and flavour combos, we will for sure give this a try! That was so nice of Megs to send you a gift! We met her in our food science class last year (even though the year before she lived on the floor above us in rez-how did we not meet sooner?!?) and you’re right – she really is the sweetest:) Also your peach-cucumber chilled soup looks fantastic! We are really warming up (?) to cold soup. Haha! And we are shocked about that Chick-Fil-A thing. If a company did that here in Ontario, they’d be bankrupt in a matter of days! It’s amazing how even now there is so much discrimination, like seriously people, get a life and stop trying to make others miserable!

  6. says

I hate it when companies do dumb things like this! I can live without the fries too!

And the thing that gets me through workouts is thinking about the feeling I get after I’m done…works like a charm!

    Have a great weekend, Laura!

    • Laura says

Yay! I love the revolution. :)

That gets me through often times as well. I’m usually thinking “one more set and it’s breakfast time!”

  7. says

I can’t wait until the idea of marginalizing gay people is as disgusting to the general population as racial segregation has become to our generation. Hopefully it happens in our lifetime. These public displays of hatred are just the last desperate cries of a dying ideology.

On a less serious note – that peach protein powder sounds so refreshing for summer! I’ve been wanting to try something new, so I might give that one a shot.

  8. says

I really appreciate you posting about your Boycott, I don’t understand why it is such a big deal to let people be. Last I checked? Jesus hung out with prostitutes and theives. I don’t think he would be a big fan of marginalizing gay people.
    Chick-fil-a? What a joke.

  9. says

Sigh. I’m so sad about Chickfila. I always thought they were such an upstanding and respectable company up until now… Such a shame.

One time my dad said to me “Hill, you may have been here longer but I am stronger!” So now everytime I run on hills, I think about that and laugh. :] Also “closer than you were yesterday” and “no matter how slow you go, you’re still lapping everyone on the couch” are among my favorites. There are too many to count!

    • Laura says

I know… whatever. I only craved it on Sunday anyway. 😉

I love the lapping the people on the couch quote!

  10. says

I heard about chick-fil-a and am absolutely horrified by this, I have heard things about their company before about anti gay slams, but this is just horrible. I am relieved there are none near me and I’ve never supported their company honestly…its horrible that they support anti-gay causes, it makes my heart ache.
I’ve had cake batter capella, and its definitely the best, love that stuff!
Totally agree on the roasted cauliflower, that is so interesting that your tried it with cocoa powder! I jus usually roast it with coconut oil + nutritional yeast. Your way sounds delicious.
I love Meg and Sara, such sweet girls.
    Have a great Friday!

  11. says

Isn’t it simply disgusting of Chick-Fil-A to support such a backwards concept, especially at this day in age? There is no way in hell that gender orientation discrimination should be supported. I don’t even know how people can think in that manner. It’s just…wrong!

Anyways, I love the list of recent faves! Cake batter flavoured anything has too be good (well, almost anything…) and the green pancakes look super tasty! I’d love to make a vegan version of them :)

Some of my favourite “finds” lately are Luna Fiber Bars (which have probably been out for a while, I’ve just never tried them)…they’re like healthy-ish Nutri-Grain bars! And I’ve also re-discovered my love of breakfast cereal (puffins!) and I have been obsessed with putting stevia-sweetend pureed tofu into my oats, for an extra protein kick!

    • Laura says

Let me know if you make a vegan version! I bet it would work perfectly.

I’ve never tried tofu oats… I bet the texture is awesome! You use silken, I assume?

      • says

Sure thing, I’ll let you know if I try to make these vegan (successfully). I can’t wait to get into the kitchen and try them out!

Yup, I use pureed silken tofu. Mori nu “lite firm” tofu is my personal favourite. And the tofu oats are delish! It almost comes out like an oatmeal pudding…they’re so creamy!

  12. says

FYI, I gave those other drops a second chance and the egg nog still sucks majorly, but the pralines n cream has grown on me…just have to be careful not to use too much! Good to know about the bacon one, but I am seriously buying that cake batter…want…NEED!

Nice monstrosity of a pancake, woman! Love adding veggies to my breakfast! And I am all about some SPICE! Yum!

Love love love Meg! I just recently found her and we are totally blogger crushing on each other right now! 😉

Off to go check out that soup! Looks amazing!

    Happy Friday gorgeous!

  13. says

Disgusting, I can live without Chick-fil-a waffle fries as well. As you said, as citizens of this country we have a right of freedom of speech, but companies that have media affects on such a large spectrum should really be aware of what they are doing/saying and how it may affect others, and with respect to Chick-fil-a may be they did and still made the choice to publicize these thoughts. This is just a tough one for me, with all the recent suicides in gays, and struggling with a gay suicide at my small college two years ago.

  14. says

Yes no skimping on the spices in those pancakes, that’s what makes them awesome! Glad you liked them! Chick-fil-a sounds like the worst company. I have never eaten there and never would but weren’t they also involved in some animal cruelty scandal? Ugh, let’s just support small businesses instead. I want cake batter flavor! Oh man. Will investigate that! Have a lovely weekend! :)

    • Laura says

Thanks! I think next time I want to use some fresh ginger in there. Try to make them like gingerbread cakes!

  15. says

That breakfast looks delicious! Really a bummer about Chick-fil-a…they need to grow up and get with the times. Good for you for signing that pledge.

  16. says

We found an extra espresso machine when we moved. I know, how does one “find” an extra espresso machine, but it was in the way back of a hard-to-reach cabinet and it must have been a gift before we actually drank espresso. Pretty cool! :)

  17. says

Wow that really disgusts me that a company would stand up and support discrimination like that. We don’t have Chick-fil-A here in Canada, but on my future trips to the US they will definitely NOT be getting my business.

Also I totally agree with you about egg yolks. Love em! 😀

  18. says

I TOTALLY agree with you on Chick fil a. I’m already skeptical about how you can make so much money only serving chkn and be closed one day a wk. This is clearly cheap chicken pumped w/ hormones and I’m sure the working conditions at the plants are bad too, but please give us insight on “so called” morals and values that use discrimination. UGH! So annoying.

  19. says

I honestly do not know what Chick-Fil-A was until this post but I wish they would disappear! In a modern society, who knew such medieval perspectives still existed!

    Choc Chip Uru

  20. says

Chick-Fil-A can suck it. Wow. I get more and more disappointed in our society as the days go on. le sigh. I’m still thinking about that green pancake… that I must try immediately. I’m also wonder what the heck is happening with Food buzz. I feel so out of the loop. heh. I hope you have a great weekend!

    • Laura says

Same here, sad to say. :(

I think once they get the new platform up, Foodbuzz will be good. For now, I’m just ignoring it. :)

  21. says

To be honest, I wasn’t surprised when I heard about the Chick-Fil-A anti-gay bomb. They’ve always marketed themselves as being a Christian restaurant with strong moral values. That’s why they don’t open on Sunday. What’s unfortunate, is that its another example of someone using religious beliefs as an excuse for hate. Lame.

I’m intrigued about the cauliflower. Wow.

And I always have to laugh and push a little harder when my VERY French spinning instruction says in the last 30 seconds of a sprint…’Can you put a little more resistaaaaahnce? Of course you can!

    • Laura says

It’s sad that being a Christian company make it unsurprising that they discriminate. :(

Spinning with a French accent… I love it!

  22. says

All I can say is good thing I am no longer on a college meal plan because I will NOT be eating at Chick Fil A again. Makes me so irritated….

  23. says

sad to hear this about chick-fil-a, to be honest we have never eaten there in our life. not sure why just never big fans.
and peach protein – wow that sounds delicious! we love our peaches!!

  24. says

Boy, do I miss my Georgia peaches!! That soup sounds soo refreshing! And peach flavored protein powder? I didn’t even know there was such a thing. I like using vanilla or chocolate to make smoothies bc it’s so versatile.. taste good in everything. But I feel peach flavor might be too overpowering. What did you think? Chocolate cauliflower? :0 I’d like to pick your brain sometime :).

    • Laura says

I really liked the peach flavor! I am typically the same way, preferring vanilla to funky flavors. It was a nice change though!

  25. Sable@SquatLikeALady says

Thank you for addressing this issue. Chick-fil-a boils my blood. Based on their anti-gay and anti-choice actions and statements, I will NEVER eat there – not even if I was starving. Ridiculous.

    • Laura says

Cheers to that! There are too many good companies to support. Plus, I don’t think they’re on either of our diet plans. 😉

  26. says

Oh sis! <3 you are the sweetest EVERRRRRR! I seriously hope you LOVE that tea! I have it EVERY day and think of you. I used to think "Oh, Laura would LOVE this!" now I think "I wonder if Laura tried it yet!?" hehe :)

You are one of my best friends, girl <3 I can't wait until we meet!

  27. says

seriously… this pancake frightened me a bit 😀 but the idea of quinoa flour is so great. have not seen it anywhere in germany yet, but if I grind quinoa on my own it should be the same – right?

    • Laura says

Don’t be scared! I think you could grind your own quinoa flour… Iv’e never done t though. My coconut flour sub worked really well, and I’m assuming you could also sub whole wheat or other flours.

  28. says

I’ve been avoiding Chik Fil A for years–I think this info came out a while ago but was never “officially confirmed.” I wish the company would feel a backlash for this and rethink their priorities…but odds are, they won’t. And mm, you’ve just reminded me how much I love cauliflower and that it’s been way too long since I last had any. Adding that to the ol’ grocery list :)

    • Laura says

Right – this is the first public statement that’s been made (to my knowledge). I saw a news report saying they haven’t seen a decrease in business yet, but that the social media outrage has been impressive.

  29. says

OMG I had the most AMAZING Golden Tomato Gazpacho made with mango while I was in NY, and I have been dreaming about recreating a number of cold soups ever since. [Bloody Mary Gazpacho? Yes, please!]

I had NO idea about that Chick-Fil-A situation. That is AWFUL. I am never going to buy their Ice Dream again.

Runny eggs…oh man. I was thinking about de-veganing yesterday because all I wanted was to make a runny egg and dip some bread into it. Oddly enough, the bread I have is the P28. :)

  30. says

I’m usually a total soup fan, but for some reason, this summer I just haven’t bothered. So sad, because that soup looks good.

Do those flavor drop things ship outside the US? (I could look myself but I’m lazy.) I’d actually like to get the bacon one if it’s like liquid smoke because I can’t find it here.

Also, I agree with you, why would a company waste it’s time to say they support “anti-gay whatever” or even “pro gay” whatever. It’s a company, not a moral or social organization.

    • Laura says

I’m like that with hot soups right now… and I have a few recipes I really want to try!

Not sure about the flavor drops. you can get them through a few sites, so I’d recommend Googling around.

  31. says

Thinking of you and this post since I’m actually going to chick fil a right now for their support day. Your post was actually the first I heard about it. So I still stand by what I said against judging and discrimination and that its about love. But also after reading more about it think he only stood for his personal beliefs and never outright discriminated against service or workers or others. I can’t fault that. Just giving an update to kill time in the crazy line I guess.

    • Laura says

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, even if they are discriminatory. I can choose to vote with my dollar though. They give money to organizations that are blatantly discriminate. That money comes from patrons of their business. By not spening my money there, I feel in some small way I’m helping to NOT contribute to anti-gay organizations.
